This review is from: Ullmann: Complete Piano Sonatas (Jeanne Golan) (Steinway & Sons: STNS 30014) (Audio CD)
There are a number of fine artists now recording the music of those unfortunate composers who were incarcerated in Theresienstadt, or who suffered a similar fate, under the Nazi regime. Exploring the rich creativity of Pavel Haas, Erwin Schulhoff, Gideon Klein, and Viktor Ullmann is proving to be exceptionally rewarding. The complete piano sonatas by Ullmann are here performed in a most masterly and sensitive way by Jeanne Golan. Although I haven't heard other versions, Golan's affinity with the music really does come across and I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole set. These works are yet another tribute to those composers whose artistic will and creativity managed to rise above the horrifying circumstances in which they found themselves.
