You can quibble about the packaging, splitting of albums between 3 discs, lack of artwork etc, but this contains five of what many would consider to be his top ten albums [only Olé Coltrane from 1962 would not make the cut, and that's no dud], and all for £3.99 delivered to your home!!! What do you want? Fabulous music and value - don't quibble!! If you want better packaging you still have choices to spend a little more. I liked the fine original LP artwork, some of which I still have, but now it's lost somewhat in CD sized covers anyway...
PS. One reviewer here got a faulty pack with two of the CD1 discs. Instead of using customer service to rectify this, he or she wrote a one star review!! That's just sad ...

Sweet continuing with my explorations in to jazz I decided to buy this box set the first disc is great Giant steps is such an awesome album full of exciting Bass playing and drumming and Saxophone Blue Train is equally as exciting though slightly more toned down I felt I have not listened to the other albums yet but if they are anything like the these two it is easily a great box set Fantastic

Another week another cash in jazz release...
At leasy the cd s in this collection are packed 60-70minutes each (unlike some other re-issue labels) with some fantastic Coltrane from circa 1959/60 but the packaging is not the original far superior album artwork so the feel of rhe era is lost. A shame.

However, this release does contain some great Coltrane in the original recordings such as the lesser known but stellar Ole and his creative breakthrough lp Giant Steps Through to vol.1 here of the outstanding Africa/Brass which is Coltrane in larger ensemble playing fantastic exploratory moodier tracks with far higher intensity and edge than his earlier material just two years earlier. five stars for the marvellous jazz and sax playing but 1 star for the packaging and split lp s over the cd s here.

So five stars for great value but three stars overall for non-authentic artwork and an inferior release to the original prestige, blue note, atlantic and impulse label collections of this sax legend. great value like i say but wouldn't you rather have the authentic original lp cover artworks and liner notes on the originals which are all still available and at very modest prices ?

LOve John Coltrane and what a great way to expose yourself to his Essential tracks.

Would be a great collection if CDs 1 and 2 content would not be the same! What a shame... To paraphrase, CD2 has the same songs as CD1. Music and sound quality is top notch though.
