5.0 out of 5 stars Three new male (!) prisoners arrive in Wentworth - 1984,
This review is from: Prisoner Cell Block H: Volume 16 [DVD] (DVD)Volume 16 of the ongoing Prisoner: Cell Block H release features another 32 episodes (481 - 512) as originally seen in Melbourne Australia's Channel 10 between August 1984 and February 1985. The first UK screening of these episodes was in the Midlands between June and September 1990 followed by the rest of the country from 1993 onwards. These episodes were never screened in the ITV Border region as they skipped around 70 episodes to screen episodes simultaneously with their neighbour Granada in autumn 1993.
The major cliffhanger celebrating a 500 episode achievement for the series is a decent storyline involving Governor Anne Reynolds (the late Gerda Nicolson) and Meg Morris (Elspeth Ballantyne). Meg herself is only just getting over a horrible ordeal at the start of this discset.
Wentworth hosts a dance marathon, an officer finds herself clinging for life from the catwalk, one of the residents finds herself having her hair shaven off by the other women, and there's the possibility that Joan Ferguson (Maggie Kirkpatrick) could become governor of Wentworth! There's also a new top dog at the end of this discset.
Departing in this set is Heather Rodgers (Victoria Nicholls) only to be replaced by Len Murphy (the late Maurie Fields).
New arrivals in Wentworth include Lexie Patterson (Pepe Trevor), Kerryn Davies (Jill Foster), Sam Greenway (Robyn Gibbes), Yemil Bakarta (Maria Mercedes), three male (!) prisoners also arrive - Matt Delaney (Peter Bensley), Geoff McRae (Les Dayman) and Frank Burke (Trevor Kent). We also say goodbye for the final time to Pixie Mason (Judy McBurney).
A month after the last episode on this discset, a new soap opera Nighbours began in Melbourne on Channel 7. Within two years Neighbours would go on to oust Prisoner from it's Channel 10 studios and would go onto becoming a megahit in the UK.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES, GREAT QUALITY PITY ABOUT THE SHODDY CASES !,
This review is from: Prisoner Cell Block H: Volume 16 [DVD] (DVD)I AM ABSOLUTELY THRILLED THAT THIS WONDERFUL, TIMELESS SERIES IS BEING RELEASED AND I AM IN THE PROCESS OF COLLECTING ALL 692 EPISODES OF P:CBH. IT`S MY OWN PERSONAL "SANITY-SAVER" !
CONSIDERING THE AGE OF THIS SERIES THE QUALITY OF THE SOUND AND PICTURE ARE REMARKABKE AND I IMAGINE MUST BE DUE TO CLEVER REMASTERING BY SHOCK OR FREMANTLE.
MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE CASES ON THE LAST FEW VOLUMES HASN`T BEEN AS GOOD AS THE FIRST FEW! HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD TROUBLE WITH THEM? I FIND THAT I HAVE THE DEVIL`S OWN JOB IN CLOSING THEM PROPERLY AND ALIGNING THE CLIPS TO FASTEN SECURELY! I WISH THAT THEY`D KEPT TO THE BETTER DESIGM OF THE FIRST 10 OR SO VOLUMES ! THEY CAN`T HAVE BEEN _THAT_ MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE! :o(
THAT`S THE ONLY BUG-BEAR, THOUGH AND I AM JUST SO CHUFFED TO COLLECT THIS CLASSIC SERIES! CAN`T WAIT FOR THE REST TO BE RELEASED!
I HAVE EPISODES 640 - 692 TRANSFERRED FROM MY OLD VHS FROM WHEN I TAPED THEM OFF THE TELLY WAY BACK IN 1991, BUT I CAN`T WAIT FOR THE IMPROVED QUALITY OF THESE DVD`S ! :o)
WELL DONE FREMANTLE !
5.0 out of 5 stars Classic,
This review is from: Prisoner Cell Block H: Volume 16 [DVD] (DVD)Best tv series, classic, even though the walls wobble the episodes keeps you glued i'll be really sad when i get to the last episode, i remember watching them all when they were on tv back in the late 70's early 80's and loved the series then, so when i saw they were on dvd i just had to get them, the freak is one of the best characters they introduced to the series while watching you can't help but hate her but then something happens and you feel sorry for her.
Each volume is good value for what you pay and has hours worth of entertainment.
