5.0 out of 5 stars Thin, but powerful with a good display
The main selling point of this laptop is its size, apparently the thinnest in the world. The first thing I did when taking it out of its rather neat and sturdy packaging (A box suspended within a box!) was look at it from the side. It's almost the laptop that isn't there, with the main body being only slightly thicker than USB ports. Build quality is extremely good, with...

3.0 out of 5 stars Samsung Series 9 (NP900X4D)
This was bought elsewhere so is not a review of Amazon or their service (which is pretty damn good anyhow).

PRO's
The Samsung is lightening fast, light as a feather and a delight to use. It can sit on your lap all evening without discomfort. Battery life is excellent. Screen is the brightest I've ever owned. It is quiet and it is cool (both in...

4.0 out of 5 stars Computer great but offer of free tablet is more tricky..., 3 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C 15-inch Laptop (Black) - (Intel Core i5 3317UM 1.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
The computer is great- light, fast ...

It came with an offer of a free Samsung tablet. The tablet has to be claimed separately via a complex process... 1 month later and still no luck. I'm not giving up yet but it seems very wrong that the free tablet is so hard to get once the product has been paid for!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Aston Martin of the laptop world (but a few WI/FI issues), 26 July 2012

Mr. B. R. Good (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C 15-inch Laptop (Black) - (Intel Core i5 3317UM 1.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
NOTE: This review has been slightly downgraded following the discovery of KNOWN WIFI issues with the Series 9.
A Google search has uncovered thousands of similar complaints. Poor WIFI signal quality.
After 2.5 hours of searching Samsung website/web for help and trying in vain to contact tech support I have no option but to downgrade this review.

*THE FOLLOWING REVIEW WAS MADE LONG BEFORE I DISCOVERED THE WIFI BUG*

PRO'S: Beautifully thin, light as a magazine, robust build quality, impressive sound/graphics, from cold to fully operational in seconds.

CON'S: None of any importance. No disk drive due to size (hardly an issue).

This striking laptop starts from cold to fully loaded in seconds and it's a technological marvel that something so thin can have so much power and speed 'hidden' inside it.

Even the packaging is stylish and practical. Inside the slim and light 'briefcase' style outer box, is a high quality black display case. Inside this is one of the thinest laptops in the world.

The incredibly thin .50" brushed metal (aparantly the type of tough aluminium used to make planes), weighing 2.66lb makes it as easy to carry as a newspaper or a small folder. The laptop is coated in a sturdy aluminium 'mineral ash black' frame (Some research shows that 'mineral ash black' is a proprietary term used by Samsung).A very slight gripe is that the matt surface shows finger marks with surprising ease but It's hardly worth mentioning so let's move on...

DESIGN:

The layout and design is superb. A full size keyboard (large keys, spacious and light to the touch) that has a backlight which is a blessing when using the computer at night. There is an array of seconary functions that can be activated by the keys that double up with added
functionality. i.e volume, brightness and more. The SD card slot, USB ports and Micro HDMI are neatly placed at the sides of the keyboard. Samsung has even had the foresignt to add a flap that covers the card slot. This helps prevent dust and dirt entering and potentially
causing damage.

The mouse pad works better than the avarge laptop. I am someone who prefers a proper plug-in mouse, as I usually find these built in mousepads frustrating. Not so here. Larger than everage and highly responsive.

PICTURE Quality / Experience:

Refreshingly, the screen is matt. Many people prefer this due to less glare that shiny screens. Crisp graphics described as 'LED HD+ with 'SuperBright(tm) Technology'. It's crystal clear and a joy to watch video on. A recent survey by a leading PC publication found that
the majority of users prefer matt this to glossy - even though the manufacturers usually ignore this fact. The 'Superbright Plus' display is a proprietary technology and here is how it is described by Samsung:

"SuperBright(tm) Plus displays are up to twice as bright as standard notebook screens, and reproduce up to 16 million colors. Another reason the new Samsung Series 9 is stunning both inside and out".

Testing the picture quality using HD movie previews streamed from the web - I can confirm that this is a high quality experience. Also, there is a glorious 170 degree viewing angle. So useful, and so lacking in other devices.

SOUND:

There a 2 x 2w speakers that sound genuinely impressive and handle stereo/surround better than any laptop I have sampled. The fact that the speakers are hidden under the sides of the frame is even more impressive considering the sound is not muffled in any way (looks like it should be). Volume level is slightly limited. I use spotify and every so often I need to have the volume up to max on the laptop AND Spotify player. However, my personal preference is to plug in headphones. This is when the sound really comes alive.

SoundAlive(tm) is the propritary technology used. Here is how Samsung describe it:

"Optimized Audio Experience with SoundAlive.
Indulge your musical sensibilities with SoundAlive, an incredible audio technology for spacious sound, deep bass, enhanced tone, and crystal clarity.
It intelligently makes automatic adjustments to sound quality by
analyzing the source. So no matter whether you are watching the latest
action blockbuster or listening to a favorite classic,
you'll hear exactly the way it was meant to be heard, optimized."

SPEED/PERFORMANCE:

The Intel® Core(tm) i5-3317U Processor is one of the products strongest assets. The 8GB memory complements this. Never has a computer, (be it laptop or desktop) loaded so fast (if I'm wrong, tell me!). Samsung describe it as follows "Solid state drives mean you can boot up in as fast as 8.4 seconds, and load applications at the speed of whiplash".

I agree with the above statement.

POWER & CHARGE TIME:

The story just gets better. For someting so powerful, so thin, surely it drains power at lightning speed? Wrong. The beautifully small charge pack, (about the size of 2 mobile phones) powers up the laptop within an hour or so, and the laptop can work for several hours
after being charged. I don't beleive it is useful to give estimates as it depends on so many factors but I do agree with Samsung when they say "advanced Lithium-Polymer battery has a lifespan up to 3 times longer than a conventional battery, lasting up to 9 hours on a single charge." In my experience, using multiple multimedia applications, while listening to audio and processing video, a very decent 3-4 hours (at least) is possible.

If Samsung keep producing items of this quality, the question may be "what Apple?".

1.0 out of 5 stars unbelievably frustrating to use, 16 Dec 2012
This review is from: Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C 15-inch Laptop (Black) - (Intel Core i5 3317UM 1.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
I jusr wanted to warn users who buy this laptop - this is not a user friendly laptop and it is absolutely frustrating to use. It's not logical. there are no escape button that will allow you to exit the applications, no easy way to close apps, no easy way to add items on the start screen easily, the storage space is dismal - ive been using it for one day only and the storage is near capacity. I have a gmail account which I would like to monitor but I am having to use the pathetic Microsoft account and I still can't check my emails. Do yourselves a favour and do not buy this laptop until Samsung gets their act together! They did a fabulous job with the Samsung III mobile which is why I considered another Samsung product but no this is just pathetic and nothing like their other products. Given all the above, it is a shame as the lightness of the laptop and battery life is good but the frustration levels far outweighs the positives.

Shame on you Samsung!
