5.0 out of 5 stars Fab!
I'm an avid reader of true crime books and i thoroughly enjoyed this one. well written, and completely engaging, each chapter described cases which were less well known, which is a bonus for me as I have read so many books which are just rehashed studies of more famous killers. 3.0 out of 5 stars An ok read
Fairly one dimensional read. Some interesting facts gleaned, but a bit mundane for my taste. Felt an average read in this genre.

I also liked how the author provided a 'case formulation' at the end of each chapter discussing why the killer committed their crime. I couldn't put it down. would absolutely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars 15 varied murders, 3 Oct 2013

This is a clear and detailed description of fifteen murders from the 20th century. The varied motives for these murders and consequent court cases for the defence and the prosecution make for some very interesting and sometimes disturbing reading.

Certainly worth more than a just dip into these sad events.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 24 Sep 2013
This review is from: A Mix of Murders: Fifteen Historic English Cases from the Twentieth Century (Kindle Edition)
Interesting stories, most of which the author adds a little to at their conclusion such as comparison to similar cases etc. Although i read this a case at a time before bed it was a struggle to put it down. I like the authors style of writing and would recommend this book as well worth reading.

The fascination with crime and criminals gives this collection a value and interest particularly as this selection is of cases less often examined. Rixby, Christie -did he kill Mrs Evans- , Haigh have all been done, these are different.
The advance in forensic science is apparent.

I'm reading this now and thoroughly enjoying it. I've not read any of the author's work before, but his writing style is precise, easy to read and engaging. The cases appear to have been researched with care and I'm delighted, as a massive true crime fan, to find so many I'd not heard of before. I really hope there is a follow up.

Grahame Farrell has put together an excellent collection of chapters dealing with UK murders of the 20th century. While most of these cases are little remembered today, each of them has some fascinating elements which makes them equally as interesting as the more celebrated cases which have been written about ad nauseum elsewhere. The writing is clear and concise and Mr Farrell really draws you into each case, with his meticulous research and appealing writing style. An author to watch - highly recommended!!
