5.0 out of 5 stars A top spinning in your head, 22 Jun 2013

This review is from: Eames: The Architect & The Painter [DVD] (DVD)
This film is great documentary.

It has lots of fascinating old footage and also more recent interviews with people who worked with Charles and Ray Eames and also
interviews with friends and close relatives.

The DVD, unfortunately, has no subtitles. Images and sound are good.

We have here an Eames chair and I knew a bit about Charles Eames but I had no idea that he was an accomplished an very creative film maker.

I watched, many years ago, the short movie "Powers of Ten" where you see a couple in a park and then the camera starts to expand out until you see
a whole galaxy then the camera reverses and reduces its scope of view until you see atoms. It was really magical watching the movie in a cinema during an
exhibition of animation films if I remember right. I was so happy and surprised when I saw that short film again whilst watching this documentary.
I never thought that the same creative mind that designed the Eames chair and other things was also doing films and films so good as "Powers of Ten".

There is an interview with a designer, who worked with the Eames couple, where she makes a connection between the creative mental process and the throwing
of a spinning top. It was the most impressive, most extraordinary explanation I've heard about anything related to art.

I am now trying to get the box set with 6 dvds with some of Charles Eames films, including "Powers of Ten" and "Tops". Amazon UK sells only individual dvds for exorbitant prices
but I found out that the Eames office sells the box set for about $80. Fine, but unfortunately the cost of postage is ridiculous as it is higher than the box set itself so
I am still looking for a place to buy the box set from.

4.0 out of 5 stars You sat on their chairs, now watch their film., 1 April 2013
This review is from: Eames: The Architect & The Painter [DVD] (DVD)
The Eames, husband Charles and wife Ray, have reasonable claim for putting the capital 'D' in design and making designers the iconic taste makers of our age. This documentary starts off with their chairs, covers their films, exhibitions and indeed, pretty much everything else you can think of. It does its best to be warts and all, but even so, I found it hard to dislike Charles with his big goofy grin and Ray like a grinning chinese doll. Their most memorable creation was actually themselves, the most fun, talented, modern couple you could possibly imagine. The status that Steve Jobs has now, they were bigger and better.

The film started out as a PBS documentary, and is a respectable 85 minutes long. It is not the most spectacular documentary ever made, but the raw material more than makes up for it. There are a host of interviewees, oddly the most normal seeming is Paul Schrader who wrote Taxi Driver.

The documentary has plenty of replay value, largely because the Eames were such interesting people, if you know a lot about them it probably won't tell you much more, but if you think you have never heard of them, you will recognise plenty of their creations.

Marked down slightly because it is rather expensive for a DVD, but the content is top rate.

Beautifully made package with allusive graphics very proper for his contents, a good designer should be accompanied with aesthetics matching his work.
