If you have an interest in the First World War, you are going to want to read this book.

The author is a young man that has served in the ranks, before accepting a commission. The book is drawn from his diary accounts of life in France as a junior officer just before the battle of Ypres in 1917. He has expanded the text from the original and gives a really good indication of what life was like for the serving troops and their officers.

It is written in a style that indicates his class and status within the society of the day. It gives details of daily life behind the lines and also some time within the main trenches. Information on battle injuries and being gassed are discussed in a slightly off hand manner which hides the true situation.

A superbly detailed account of things that have now faded from living memory - well worth the read.

an interesting book worth a read if only to see how Best Dunkley managed to kill a number of his men on a route march through heat exhaustion and dehydration.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting first hand account, 7 July 2014

An interesting read. A little "public school -y" in places but unsurprising given what I imagine to be the background of the author. Should be read in conjunction with the official war diaries and other factual accounts.

An interesting and at times offhand description of one man's experience on the Western Front during 1917. His attitude towards the tasks he had to carry out prior to his involvement in the events of late summer that year.

Having read numbers of books about WW 1 written by soldiers in the lower ranks, this book gives a different angle on the fighting and especially with reference to subjects like meals and servants.
