5.0 out of 5 stars Devastating!
I cried bitter tears on finishing this classic! Beautifully written with acutely observed characters. Overall it was a powerful and emotional trip through the life and loves of a passionate, complex and intelligent woman.
Repressed feelings, social ostracism, family feuds, kinship, pomp, pride, spirit, materialism, forgiveness, sibling love, sexual love, morality,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Wordy
I have read and enjoyed Eliot,s work before but with this novel I found it too lengthy, I would have to reread many pages as by the time I got to the bottom I had some how lost the thread. She is marvellous at descriptions and her characters particulary the sisters are so well observed and well drawn. It is such a humerous book at times and full of pathos at others. I...

Having loved this book when I read it in the sixties I found it really rather depressing now. The book club were really looking forward to this book and we all felt the same. It is of course beautifully written but so gloomy!

Wonderfully narrated, reminds me why George Eliot is one of the most highly regarded of the Victorian writers.

3.0 out of 5 stars A classically entertaining novel!, 22 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Mill on the Floss is a sensitively written exploration of childhood and family life in the 19th century, later developing into an exciting novel. The book follows the central character through her early life, and includes both romance and drama, while also bringing into question the morals of contemporary society. Although a lengthy novel, Mill on the Floss is ultimately an extemely satisfying read.

The book has American spelling. I consider this to be insulting to a classical English novel. Fortunately the interpretation has remained true to the original.
