5.0 out of 5 stars Feels just like being there.
I am biased here because Lawrence is my favorite author, and I have read this and all his other works before. I just thought it would be nice to have this on Kindle, because it's that sort of book you can dip in and out of where you like in the book, and at any stage, unlike a novel, of course, that must be read in order. 2.0 out of 5 stars D.H. at his worst.
D.H.Lawrence at his worst - full of his fanciful sexual or mystical insights into human behaviour and of the natural world.

I just thought it would be nice to have this on Kindle, because it's that sort of book you can dip in and out of where you like in the book, and at any stage, unlike a novel, of course, that must be read in order. I like to imagine I am almost 'there' with lawrence as he describes the scenery in his own, inimitable style. It's interesting, too, to read his letters to his mother in law, whom he bonded with so well. I feel close to my father when I read this book, as he was Italian,so it is special for that reason, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Capturing the Blessed, 3 Sept. 2014

Too much love for one's country can be the recourse of a scoundrel, as Dr Johnson said. At least it can appear as special pleading, often born out of ignorance or xenophobia. Love of another country, its culture and people, may by contrast seem noble and charming. Lawrence is both in his attention to northern Italy in this book. His year on the western shore of Lake Garda confirms its mystique as a haven of gods, and with more tenderness than other writers lavished on it - D'Annunzio and Pound among contemporaries who may have helped lead his steps there. Lawrence's method is admirable too: to describe - a prospect, a theatre, an inn - and then via its inhabitants and their deeper auras take off into flights about sex, fate and religion. These intimations articulate forms of what everyman experiences at concerts or in observation of great works of art, towards 'our earliest picture dreamings'. It is in evocation of this 'dreaming awake' capacity that Lawrence becomes a great poet of the Soul. Nowhere in his non-fiction is this demonstrated with more clarity or less force than this paean to a world in danger of vanishing before the onslaught of modern mechanization and materialism.

Who wouldn't be delighted to find the public domain list of FREE classic literature. This is fantastic. All the titles I've always wanted to read and for free - this is my kind of kindle heaven. I love the way they arrive on your kindle, they're so quick, it's like magic. Thank you public domain!

4.0 out of 5 stars DH and his view of Italy, 30 Mar. 2014

Typical Lawrence, why use three words when seventeen will do, long and often convoluted descriptions, however that's is expected from David Herbert and the style of writing at the time. Nevertheless this was an interesting insight into the Italy of his day. Not a jolly holiday book, but a good read for any italophiles.
