4.0 out of 5 stars Lesser known gem
This is not one of Trollope's famous novels but it is a delight and I am surprised it is not better known. The shipboard and Australian sequences are fascinating, the narrative is gripping and it contains great set pieces and vivid Trollopian characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars good, not great
The hero was a bit dull. The heroine was a trooper, her mother mad, but a great character. The baddies not so well drawn, especially mrs smith. A little too old fashioned overall. And not enough about Australia.

I am slowly making my way down the list of all Trollope's novels. This is a long one but one full of fascinating detail including life in Australia during the gold rush, the workings of the Post Office, and the shortcomings of the legal system in the 1870s.

I have given it 4/5 as the re-caps of what had gone before annoyed me even though I am aware that the novel was serialised and therefore Trollope was using the re-cap for the benefit of readers who were new to the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars The end was missing!, 28 Jun 2014

Since buying this novel from you and reading it, we have discovered that there was more to the story, missing in the format you sold us (photocopied from Harvard University library). Your version ends with the hero saying he will probably have to go to gaol. We have found out, from reading the biography of Trollope by Victoria Glendinning, that in fact, the book contains more enquiries made in Australia, as to the veracity of the claims made by Mrs Smith and others, and there is a lot more to it.
As this edition was relatively expensive compared with others, we consider it to be unacceptable to sell it with the final pages missing. The typescript was also in places distorted.

I was really interested in what happened in this novel, which was a surprise. I will read more Anthony Trollope.
