5.0 out of 5 stars OLD TIME RIPPING YARN
Bought this because part of it is set in an area of Sussex familiar to me. It is a ripping yarn about the Saxon resistance to the Danes around 1000 AD and creates a good sense of place and character.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, marred slightly by the writing style.
The author, Whistler (not THAT Whistler), decided to write this story in a deliberately antiquated style, which some readers may find difficult, or, like me, a little overdone and irritating at times, but generally this is an entertaining enough read especially if you have any interest in this period of English history. But don't expect any complex twists and turns...

I loved reading this. A well balanced tale beautifully told. It was clearly written before revisionist narrative got hold of Anglo-Saxon-Viking history

But don't expect any complex twists and turns. Also it may be useful to point out that a modern author would spend more time building suspense and excitement about the individual fight or flight episodes, whereas here it is all rather understated and matter-of-fact. Funnily enough, having said that, I think it would make a reasonable action/romance movie. Now I have to go and find out if it ever was....
