2.0 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent Ramblings
Struggling with this! Admittedly I'm not that far into it, but my heart sinks whenever I pick it up, knowing that I'm about to put myself through half-an hour of self-indulgent ramblings and one-sided discussion. As a classic, I can imagine that in it's day this book stimulated a few minds and provided a certain amount of food for thought. Alas in this day and age, the...

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any philosopher., 22 April 2013

The language used is a bit dated but is easy to get through with a bit of imagination.
Very poetic and beautifully descriptive.

A great book, with a deserved reputation. If you have not read it, then read it. If you have, buy a cheap copy like this to give away.

A true classic and a definitive piece of writing for anyone wanting to leave the rat race of modern life and turning towards a path of independence, all from an author who was way ahead of his time in critical thinking. A great read!

2.0 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent Ramblings, 18 Aug 2013

Struggling with this! Admittedly I'm not that far into it, but my heart sinks whenever I pick it up, knowing that I'm about to put myself through half-an hour of self-indulgent ramblings and one-sided discussion. As a classic, I can imagine that in it's day this book stimulated a few minds and provided a certain amount of food for thought. Alas in this day and age, the several hundred-page long soliloquy seems to me no more thought provoking than the average internet blog!
I really hope that I'll read a bit further and discover something highly original that will get me hooked, but at this point it seems unlikely.

Expected to love it but HDT comes across as a little self centered. Interesting to read though and the background is quite good.

As a writer, having this on hand is like having an old friend to talk with quietly in the night.
