5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeliebable!, 18 July 2012
This review is from: Believe (DVD)
I recommend this to anyone. Boy. Girl. Children. Adults. Anyone. Each and every track is beautiful. Each song has obviously been crafted over a long time to make them as close to perfect as is simply possible. My favourite tracks on the album are probably Fall and Maria.

4.0 out of 5 stars I didn't believe in Justin, but i'll admit this album surprised me!, 10 July 2012
This review is from: Believe (DVD)
Justin Bieber is the purist example of a 'love him or hate him' individual and the young YouTube star has managed to accumulate both an extremely devoted fan base and an equally hostile opposition. There is no escaping him or his music, and with the latter in mind let me review this new album as objectively as possible.

First of all I am not a fan of Justin. His debut album I really disliked and I grew to utterly despise the singles "Baby" and "One Time" (as I am sure many people did). The whole album was full of churned-out pop singles that were clearly aimed at adolescent girls, seeing as I am not part of that target audience I guess it was inevitable that I wasn't going to like it. Due to both word of mouth and relentless promotional advertising I figured I would give Justin's new album a listen and I can honestly admit I was surprised with my verdict. Just like Justin personally this album definitely feels a lot more mature when compared to his "I'll never let you go" days, this point can be seen with the variety of music styles and collaborations found here and on that note I shall go into more detail about "Believe" as an album.

The album begins with the up-beat single "All Around the World" featuring none-other than Ludacris (the individual who duo'd with Bieber to create the infamous single "Baby") and straight away is showing a slightly different side to Justin's previous music, Ludacris certainly adds positively to the track and I felt it was a solid beginning to the album. The tracks "As long as you love me" featuring Big Sean and "Beauty and the Beast" featuring Nicki Minaj are dance/R&B songs that add great variation to the album and demonstrate Justin is more than capable of going for a maturer audience, the latter song being my personal favourite from the entire album and both singles will undoubtedly be huge hits. "Right Here" featuring Drake is another good example of how Justin can pull off a more R&B orientated sound, the only issue I had with this song (and to a similar extent "Beauty and the Beast") is that Drake completely over-shadows Bieber on this track, it very much felt Drake featuring Bieber as opposed to the other way around.

With the collaborations covered lets get onto to some of the stand out singles. The album's first single "Boyfriend" is a catchy tune which I felt was reminiscent of Justin Timberlake's earlier sound, this song is an obvious chart success and easily one of the stronger tracks from the entire album. "Be Alright" is an entirely acoustic song that plays right to Justin's strengths and demonstrates a decent vocal range that is a pleasure to listen to, considering Justin demonstrated his great acoustic capabilities by releasing an album entirely made up of acoustic covers of his older songs I felt it was a good move to include this on the album. "Out of town girl" is an interesting single, sounding like a Timbaland produced song with a Timberlake singing style, this is a clear attempt by Justin at branching out to a maturer audience. The most interesting track I found on this album was "Maria", a song that is inspired by the scandal involving accusations from Mariah Yeater that Bieber fathered her child. Musically the song sounds very much like Michael Jackson and the repetition of the lines "that aint my baby, that aint my girl" makes the lyrics far from subtle, however I felt that this is actually one of the better songs on the entire album and I definitely felt it will be a big success.

I must say coming from a someone who is pretty anti-Bieber this album surprised me and I am not afraid to admit that, there are some truly good songs on this album. I feel that with this album Justin is more "testing the waters" than making definite illustration of Justin's new music direction, he has addressed the need to mature his music and with that he has produced a variety of songs and is waiting to see which style gets the best reception. Like any teenager of Bieber's age he is finding himself, and from some songs off this album I think we will be seeing a side to Justin that even young adults would happily admit liking.

4.0 out of 5 stars A massive step up by Justin Bieber., 27 Jun 2012
By
This review is from: Believe (DVD)
Nobody would have expected, a 14 year old Canadian boy to go on and conquer the world, setting a worldwide trend by calling his fans `Beliebers' and be called the 3rd most influential celebrity in the world in 2012. Not bad for a recently turned 18 Year old who's set to release his 3rd studio album `Believe' on Monday. The singer can count on a huge production team including `Cooler Than Me' Mike Posner, Rodney Jerkins, Max Martins, Darkchild all responsible for a big album.

`Believe' has to be the most anticipated album of the year and has so far only seen the release of one single. The lead single, `Boyfriend', a mid tempo track, saw the singer break from his usual teenage pop style to a more mature R&B sound, even though the lyrics of the track were criticised for being on the simple side. Bieber should actually receive a lot of credit for co-writing all the songs the songs. Read a track by track review of 'Believe' on the following link: [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Believe Me When I Say Buy It, 24 Jun 2012
This review is from: Believe (DVD)
I wasn't such a fan of the My World cd's but this new album is well worth buying his voice has matured, his new songs are good and his new sound could definitely earn him some male fans. I downloaded this album so I don't have anything to say about the time it took to get here or the condition it was in but I am being 100% honest when I say I would pay £13 for this album especially the deluxe which has the track that I wanted to hear the most of this album, Maria the song Justin claims is his Billie Jean. I can promise you that you will love this album and you will be very happy with it, if you like Justin Timberlake you will absolutely love this, although this album was released this week and he still has a short Us tour that will probably turn into another massive world tour after the album debuts I can't wait for his next album and I hope he keeps his music like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well Crafted R&B/Dance Pop Album, 19 Jun 2012

For the record, I am far from a "Belieber," although nor have I wasted time hating on this kid. But after hearing the slick "Boyfriend" and the heavy beat on "As Long As You Love Me." I wanted to give this a listen, just like Justin Timberlake had drawn me in a decade ago with "Like I Love You."

Yes, this album has it's flaws. It's easy to deride the often simplistic lyrics and some may say the "Believe" mantra is a little cheesy. But being in the tough spot of trying to appease his mostly "Tweener" fan base, whilst also trying to appeal to a wider audience, this is as well as you could hope to pull it off.

Justin walks the line of trying to be more mature, without being overly "Sexy," just right. And to me at least, it is quite refreshing to hear a somewhat naive and innocent view of love for once. With so much comparison to Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake, I would say this album falls somewhere right between MJ's "Bad" and Timberlake's "Justified," in what it is trying to accomplish.

For the most part the album is laced with some nice dance beats, akin to the kind that rappers such as Drake, Lil' Wayne and Nicki Minaj would rely upon. "As Long As You Love Me," "Thought Of You" & "Beauty And The Beat" pull off that formula most effectively.

Of course when it comes time to slow it down tracks like "Right Here," "Fall" (An unexpected surprise favourite of mine.) & "Die In Your Arms," do that nicely. "Die In Your Arms" also features a Jackson 5 sample. As a huge MJ fan I usually worry when people sample his songs, but this is handled nicely and is more of an affectionate nod to the late "King Of Pop." Probably due to Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins producing the track, having of course worked previously with MJ himself on his album "Invincible."

Things do begin to tail off a little towards the end, "One Love" comes across as a little lazy, "Be Alright" is obviously just there to be the acoustic, "just Justin and his guitar" track and the attempted anthem in "Believe" will probably seem cheesy to anyone who isn't already a "Belieber."

However, the 3 bonus tracks are well worth the money too, with any of them being worthy of a spot on the album itself. Again I was most interested in the heavily "Billie Jean" influenced "Maria." The beat seems a little unfinished somehow, lacking the polish of the earlier songs, but Justin pulls off the vocal excellently and again the final refrain of, "She's not my girl," comes across as a nod to MJ, rather than a straight rip-off.

Obviously a lot is owed to the various producers & writers such as Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Mike Posner & Britney collaborator Max Martin, who provide clean, crisp beats. But Justin holds his own vocally and it all comes together as a nicely crafted pop album. Will it be remembered in a few years time? Probably not. But in a sense, with a fan base that is going to grow up as he does, that's not really the point.
