Solidly made, works well - EDIT NOT solidly made! (See edit below)
on 14 July 2012
The netball ring is solidly made and is supplied with bolts and rawlplugs big enough to secure the long-reach netball hoop solidly to the wall. I did have to supply my own washers however - without these the bolt heads would scrape off the paint from the bracket leading to rust.
The only real complaint is the way the net is fastened to the hoop. Instead of the usual loop fixings found on other netball rings, this one uses flimsy bendable little metal tags (see picture). Although they are pre-bent, you still have to bend these tags closed around the cord of the net, otherwise the net simply comes detached. But the action of bending the tags closed makes the paint flake off, so now the tags are rusting. Since rainwater drops naturally hang at the lowpoint of the bend, the same place where the paint is also gone, these will rust through eventually.
On the good side, the long reach of the arm holds the hoop well away from the wall. This is good for netball practice, since it stops it being used basketball style with shots bounced in off the wall. It also makes life indoors much quieter (with a previous short-arm hoop we were subjected to a constant pounding sound of ball against wall).
Also, the hoop slots into the bracket securely - very little risk of the hoop being knocked up and out of its bracket by a mis-aimed netball striking the hoop's underside (this happened with a previous hoop from another supplier).
Update 1 July 2015
The weld holding the long arm to the part that slots into the bracket has broken. This is just through ordinary use, and not very intensive use at that. Missed shots tend to rattle the main assembly within its bracket (which makes it annoyingly noisy in use), and the repeated rattling about has found a weakness in the weld. A proper weld would be stronger than the body material, so if the weld had been properly executed any failure would entail a fatigue failure of the metal - however here it can clearly be seen that the weld has simply peeled away from the body of the metal - poor workmanship. See uploaded pictures.
I would expect more than three years' of relatively light use, so I'd have to downgrade my review to 2 stars (from previous 4)
