4.0 out of 5 stars Many Hits...A Few Misses
Be forewarned! The track list posted here is not the same as it is on the back cover of the CD which has the correct order.

All I can say is wow! I had no idea Don Covay was such a prolific composer! So many artists! Little Richard's soulful rendition of "I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me" completely surprised me. I've always respected Solomon...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Mercy
Mercy Mercy indeed. The good points about this compilation are that it's compiled with love and care by 'Ace' records, the cd is 72.43 long and has excellent sound quality. It comes with a 24 page colour booklet that's packed with pics and informative liner notes. There are some choice tracks on the cd 'Don't drive me away' by Ben E. King, 'Mercy mercy' by the Wailers and...

I've always respected Solomon Burke's style and delivery. His soul just oozes out on "You're Good For Me" which was one of my mom's favorite songs. Mary Ann Fisher curled me up into a ball as she spoon fed me a heaping plate of lovin' soul, singing "Give" just to me. Gladys & The Pips' "Come See About Me" pre-dates The Supremes' hit and it's a totally different song. Ain't no Motown pop here. "Shoes" by Brook Benton is a clever tune describing a man trying to move on but he keeps going back. Brooks blames his "Shoes". Cliff Bennett gets funky on the original version of See Saw". Etta James has every right to "...Take What He's Got" and she does it with style.

The remastering on "Have Mercy..." is of good quality. 16 of the 26 songs are in stereo. A handful of cuts on this Cd I haven't heard in many years and some I've never heard before today. Don Covay delivers a good deal of hits with this compilation. There's a few misses also but overall Covay serves up a tasty dish of R&B, heavily flavored with soul, a couple drops of pop and sprinkled with just enough funk to groove it to your liking. It just shows how the power of the pen in a talented man's hands can translate across a vast spectrum. When you can speak a language everyone is willing to to learn...well that says a lot. Don Covay is fluent in Soul, R&B, Funk and Pop on this volume.

Here's the correct order:

1 Three Time Loser - Wilson Pickett
2 Chain Of Fools - Aretha Franklin
3 You're Good For Me - Solomon Burke
4 This Old Town (People In This Town) - The Staple Singers
5 I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me - Little Richard
6 Long Tall Shorty - The Graham Bond Organization
7 There's A Party Goin' On - Wanda Jackson
8 Pony Time - Chubby Checker
9 Mercy Mercy - The Wailers
10 Mr Twister - Connie Francis
11 Love Bug - Lena Horne
12 Don't Drive Me Away - Ben E King
13 Give - Mary Ann Fisher
14 Letter Full Of Tears - Billy Fury
15 You Can Run (But You Can't Hide) - Jerry Butler
16 Come See About Me - Gladys Knight & The Pips
17 Shoes - Brook Benton With The Dixie Flyers
18 Sookie Sookie - Tina Britt
19 See Saw - Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers
20 Kangaroo Hop - Dee Clark
21 A Big Fat Saturday Night - Gene Vincent
22 Mon Cherie Au Revoir - Arlene Smith
23 The Continental Walk - The Rollers
24 I'm Gonna Take What He's Got - Etta James
25 She Said Yeah - Joe Tex
26 Watch The One Who Brings You The News - millie Jackson

Mercy Mercy indeed. The good points about this compilation are that it's compiled with love and care by 'Ace' records, the cd is 72.43 long and has excellent sound quality. It comes with a 24 page colour booklet that's packed with pics and informative liner notes. There are some choice tracks on the cd 'Don't drive me away' by Ben E. King, 'Mercy mercy' by the Wailers and the finest of them all 'You can run (but you can't hide) by Jerry Butler. Now the downside, more than any other 'Ace' compilation I own (and there are many) this has an eclectic mix that doesn't gel well together, not necessarily the mix of genres but the pace and the flow of the compilation - some tracks don't sit well next to each other to my ears. Overall some intriguing track choices, with big names like Connie francis, Gene Vincent and Billy Fury that don't gel well for this compilation of Don Covay songs that spans 1960 - 74.
