5.0 out of 5 stars sad but true
Pretty standard depressing dprk reading really. Makes me sad when there's people a few miles south chatting on the Bluetooth in their 300bhp Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Such a contrast. I also feel for the south in the sense the Korean Peninsula is like a block of flats; the neighbour on the top floor (China) is scary, and the neighbour one floor above is an armed, Rottweiler...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm
The sample looked good but it did not live up to expectations. A superficial glimpse of North Korea. Read it in less than two hours.

Dumb founding reading as you might expect . it's still crazy to think that so many people can be manipulated by this oddball regime/dynasty.
Hope they don't read this and track me down.

Out of date and far too short - either an extract from a longer book or the author couldn't be bothered to finish it. Read the Wikipedia article instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new and diferent perspective of this Country, 1 May 2014

I have read many books about this fascinating country. Although most of them describe the horrors of the camps and the day to day deprivations (and fears) of ordinary people very well. This book looks at the country from the view of a diplomat living in a privileged position.

Although as an accredited diplomat his position is somewhat privileged and as he says he tended to mix with the middle to lower ranks of the privileged party hacks and administrators. The revelations of how he had to lead is everyday life within the constrains of the regime is very interesting.

There is nothing really new said about the regime (what more can be said). The real point is the fresh perspective and an attempt to define how the rest of the world should deal with this unique country.

Read it and it will enhance your understanding of North Korea a little bit more.

This is about as thin as you would expect from a journalist with a sensation brief uppermost in the mind.
