Good first effort
on 12 June 2012
Bought this book for my tomboy niece on the basis that the combination of young female protagonist and F1 cars might be a hit. Gave it the quick once over and ended up reading the whole thing. Very good effort for the author's first foray into the field. Hardcore F1 fans may scoff here and there but not as often as you might initially think from the set up (American girl lands a place on an F1 team) but then they are not the demographic this is aimed at and the story adheres to it's own internal logic. The writer does a good job of his first person 17-year-old girl, and there is plenty of character-based drama to keep you going to an end that is both surprising and satisfying. Good positive message for young girls - don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do - and niece gave it a thumbs up three days after she got it and asked if there was anything else available by the same author - it appears for the time being there is not. If I were going to mark it down for anything, would suggest that the author needs to find himself a new proof-reader. Other than that though, give it a go - it's a good read.
