A Stunning and very cheap collection of Ravi Shankar's Music on 10 CDs totalling over 11 hours. The music is of course sitar based and mainly Ragas, but many collaborations and some shorter pieces with either Western or Eastern musicians. Recorded for EMI and affiliated labels between 1962 and 1986.
The sound quality is great and the packaging basic, with each CD in a Cardboard slip case and a small booklet which contains some recording details and potted history of Ravi in English and German.
A very worthwhile collection and bargain way to get into the music of one of India's finest musicians and a true legend

There are many Ravi Shankar compilation CD's out there and with his recent sad death, there will undoubtedly be many more. Most of them are rehashes of sometimes substandard material, often poorly mastered onto CD. This CD collection is very different, its quite simply the best. For a ridiculously low price you get 10 CD's which covers Ravi's classic period of the sixties and seventies. Both his serious and best Indian art music as well as collaborations with Western musicians are well covered. You get the complete versions of his LP albums "Improvisations", "In New York" "Morning Raga/Evening Raga "Live at Monterey" "Portrait of a Genius" "Music from India Series 4" and "India's Master Musician" and all the Indian music tracks of "West Meets East Volumes 1-3", plus about an hour of other various tracks, some unreleased (as far as I know). Superb value and wonderfully remastered. If you only want one Ravi Shankar collection, then get this one. You will not be disappointed !
Only one minor comment - there are two versions of the raga Marwa, supposedly recorded at different times, but in fact they are the same performance, the shorter version is simply missing the central jor section.

Like many Westerners, I discovered Indian classical music in general and Ravi Shankar in particular thanks to George Harrison and The Beatles. Like many of my contemporaries I developed a lifelong love of Indian music and of Ravi Shankar as one of its greatest exponents. This amazing multi-CD set contains many of the finest recordings Shankar made during a career spanning more than six decades. Included, of course, are his collaborations with one of the all-time greats of Western classical music, Yehudi Menuin. Other collaborations are with jazz musicians, with whom Shankar shared a love of improvisation. Film scores are here too. Mostly, though, what you get is Ravi Shankar and his regular musical group performing Indian ragas. As Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar, so was Ravi Shankar to the sitar. In his hands, the instrument sang with an extraordinary beauty and fluency. A genius, pure and simple, as this superb collection amply demonstrates.

I was suspicious of the price, a bargain, but it really is a great box set. Diverse but with enough ragas to please. I assume that anyone who's reading this doesn't need any comment about the briliance of Ravi Shankar, which is just as well because my ability to comment thereon would be feeble.

I chose this rating because in my opinion I would have liked to have more ragas by Ravi Shankar in this collection!

Ravi Shankar came to fame in the West largely through George Harrison. This box set of ten CDs, recorded over many years, is an ideal introduction to the master's music and, if necessary, to Indian music in general. Hours and hours of listening, some great collaborations; you'd be hard put to find better value.
