4.0 out of 5 stars Seven Deadly Sinners
1981 ITV Granada dramatisations of seven famous murder trials. The courtroom scenes are verbatim. The previous series Ladykillers - The Complete Series 1 [DVD] dealt with murderesses.
I had these recorded on well worn VHS but Network have now released them on DVD.
The cases are seven of the most infamous, dating from Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve (Hannah Gordon)...

This review is from: Lady Killers - The Complete Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)
1981 ITV Granada dramatisations of seven famous murder trials. The courtroom scenes are verbatim. The previous series Ladykillers - The Complete Series 1 [DVD] dealt with murderesses.
I had these recorded on well worn VHS but Network have now released them on DVD.
The cases are seven of the most infamous, dating from Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve (Hannah Gordon) in 1910, to the sadistic south coast sex murderer, Neville Heath in 1946.
The others are: Frederick Seddon who murdered his elderly lodger for her money.
George Joseph Smith, the notorious 'Brides In The Bath' murderer.
The overlapping cases of Ronald True (Christopher Cazenove) and Henry Jacoby, who came from opposite ends of the social spectrum.
The best episode is Thompson and Bywaters, a famous menage a trois that ended in tragedy for all, with Gayle Hunnicutt excellent as the older adulterous lover of young Frederick Bywaters. Margaret Tyzack's performance as Bywater's devastated mother is truly outstanding.
Finally, Sidney Fox, executed for matricide.
This second series is a significant improvement on the first, with better production values, direction, atmosphere and notably better casts.
If you like true crime, combined with often gripping drama, I thoroughly recommend it.

This series will remind you, if you'd forgotten, of many of the familar faces of the small screen of the 70s and 80s, however it doesn't offer much insight into the famous trials it covers. The court scenes are, as we are frequently reminded by Robert Morley, taken from actual court proceedings, however outside scenes rely on the scriptwriters imagination and thus the quality of each playlet is patchy. I prefer more fact-based offerings but if UK tv drama is what you seek this may be the series for you.

Interesting to see actors thirty years on.Elaine Paige as an actress before she hit the big-time as Evita.
Kenneth Haige and Michael Jaston also fantastic.

Considering the fact that DNA tests performed on the body found in Dr. Crippen's house, thought to be those of his wife, prove beyond doubt that it was male and could therefore not have been Mrs. Crippen one wonders how many other injustices have passed before the English courts in the 20th century
