5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, 6 Mar 2013

Grand magus have really excelled on this offering - fantastic guitars , lyrics and drums.
Unsure as to other comments about them being stoner rock - I would say more akin to the great Ronnie James Dio.
This is quite possibly their best to date , a little heavier than previous albums but quite simply superb.
No fillers here , just great rock tracks.
Anybody out there who are not aware of this great band - Go ahead do yourself a favour get out there watch them live and buy this album.

There I was stuck in a rut listening to the same old metal/rock music from my mp3 collection and then I found Grand Magus! There stuff is refreshing, brilliant and their use of plenty of rhythm makes you play their stuff over and over.

This album is slightly different from their previous offering, here you get a brilliant sombre masterpiece in the shape of "Son of the Last Breath". It is so catchy and I haven't got bored of it yet (and I listen to it a lot). Other songs which stand out are, "Starlight Slaughter", "Storm King" and "The Hunt". The three bonus songs are not too dissimilar from their polished counterparts so missing these out you get a 44 minute album full of quality metal tunes with lyrics linked to Norse Mythology.

At £4.99 for the mp3 version, there really is no excuse to download this.

I bought this on impulse after liking the cover, but I'm happy I did. It's just balls out classic, Dio, Maiden, Priest style metal. It's epic, stirring stuff. The riffs are like lot classic Maiden but with a meatier, more crunching Sabbath edge. And the vocals have the same rousing feel as Dio or Dickinson without sounding too similar to either of them. Just perfect 80s style metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite reach the heights of 'Hammer of the North' but more than worth your time, 13 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Hunt (Audio CD)
2010's 'Hammer of the North' saw the band perfecting their brand of epic old-school metal, so I had high hopes for the follow-up. And while I would say this is perhaps just a small step down from the previous album, it is still a very solid piece of work.

The album kicks off with three sure-fire winners in 'Starlight Slaughter', 'Sword of the Ocean' and 'Valhalla Rising', featuring the killer riffs and catchy choruses we've come to expect from the Swedes, topped off with JB's powerful, gin-soaked baritone.

The rest is probably a bit less consistently strong than 'Hammer of the North' was, but there's still plenty to enjoy.

The band now have JB's former Spiritual Beggars bandmate Ludwig Witt on drums, who is a fine skinsman, however I have to mention that the drum sound is not quite right for some reason, too muffled and maybe even too high in the mix; a minor complaint really.

So all in all this is yet another strong entry in the band's very impressive discography, and one that is strongly recommended for all fans of classic rock/metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets better the more you listen!, 3 Aug 2012
This review is from: The Hunt (Audio CD)
At first I wasn't quite sure that this album matched up to the pure epicness of their previous ones, there is a shift in their style from their more doom metal beginnings towards a more traditional sort of metal. But as I drove around with it in my car radio I found it really grows on you, this album is a slightly subtler experience that has to be listened to a good few times to appreciate it properly.

Grand Magus are such an underrated band and deserve more recognition generally. If you are looking for a nice refreshing change to a lot of the modern metal that just sounds the same, why give this (and all their other albums!) a go!

For those you love traditional heavy metal this is a great record! For Grand Magus fans of Iron Will this is another solid release from one of the greatest heavy metal bands of our time.
Recommended for those tired of too modern sounding or trendy rock/metal.
