4.0 out of 5 stars Retallick No 7, 15 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Ruddlemoor: Number 7 in series (Retallick Saga) (Kindle Edition)
'Ruddlemoor' continues the saga of the Cornish Retallick family - this episode set at the end of the nineteenth century tells of the arrival in Cornwall of the young Ben Retallick from Africa who takes over the clay mining business of his ageing grandparents Josh and Miriam. He encounters the ups and downs of being a mine-owner, his sympathy with his workers often at odds with other less liberal mine-owners. And as in all Retallick books, his love life is all but smooth as well.

If you are hooked on the Retallick story, this episode will not disappoint. The story bounces along - is a little far-fetched in places - but satisfying nevertheless. E V Thompson certainly knew all about Cornish history, and once again he uses his knowledge to good effect to capture the essence of Cornish working life when it was at the hub of the copper, tin and clay-mining industries. And even if his characters are a little one-dimensional, after 7 books you really come to know them.

For me - another enjoyable piece of light reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars another brilliant novel, 28 Oct. 2014

This review is from: Ruddlemoor: Number 7 in series (Retallick Saga) (Kindle Edition)
Thompson's novels have much to commend them. Rattling good stories with believable characters and authentic contexts. They also raise the question of how far our society has moved on. An upper class that is intent on safeguarding their position, grinding poverty of those on the margin and institutions like the Trade Union movement intent on pursing their own agendas. Riddlemoor is commended without reservation. It's brlliant

Another great read from EV Thompson who, over the years, has kept me entertained with the knowledge he has of those times especially down in Cornwall.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent read, cannot put down, 17 July 2013

Great continuing saga of the Retallick family, involving the grandparents, Josh and Miriam, and their grandson, Bem. This book does not disappoint. This is the seventh book in the Retallick series, but places the characters of the complete Retallick family in their geographical lcoations and their involvement in diferente aspects of life that interconnected with each other.
