5.0 out of 5 stars A fantasy to dream with again and again., 22 April 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Faust [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Wonderful blend of real-time and stop-motion storytelling by a master of the surreal. An apparently ordinary everyman is led by curiousity into a dilapidated building which turns out to be a strange cross of theatre, a puppeteer's workshop, and an alchemical laboratory. Suddenly, he finds himself becoming the legendary character Dr. Faust, selling his soul to the devil to gain magical powers.
Jan Svankmajer is the real sorcerer here and blends stage sets with real settings, seven foot puppets with live actors, and makes magic of it all.
The film has been dubbed for English audiences, but I have never seen a less obtrusive film dub. The voice performances are excellent and actually add to the surreal quality of the film.
Just one caution: This is not a "family" film. There is some adult material, so don't confuse this with Bass-and-Rankin style claymation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, weird and creepy, 15 Dec. 2013

Loved this film when i first saw it on tv in the 90's and managed to get a copy from the US before it was deleted. The box describes it as subversive and bristling with magic and that is a good description. The use of giant puppets might sound off putting but they add a really disturbing creepy feel to the film. I wouldnt say it was scary but it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck at times. The use of claymation is brilliant too and again, very creepy.

The main character in the film is given a map marked with nothing but a red spot. It piques his curiosity and he goes to find out what is there and finds an old theatre. He goes in and finds himself playing the part of faust in a play where the other characters are giant marionettes of devils and angels. He sells his sould to the devil not realising its for real and not just in the play.Of course eventually the devil comes to take his due. One of my favourite films of all time and well worth a watch but be warned, it is creepy, weird and about as far removed from a conventional style film as you can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unusual version of Faust!, 6 Dec. 2012

This review is from: FAUST (1994) [IMPORT] (DVD)
I first saw this on T.V. back in the 90's or so and was fascinated by this rather surreal take on the Faust story, combining real life with puppetry. Tried to track down a DVD for ages and was so pleased to finally find it available here!

Having first seen this on TV in the 90's and been utterly captivated by it, it's wonderful to finally find the film on DVD. Alternately funny, eerie, beautiful and extremely creepy, this is one of the all time greats. A truly unique piece of film making.
