5.0 out of 5 stars THE SOUNDS OF EARTH - A UNIVERSAL JOY!, 28 Sep 2012

I'll state right away that 'the holy mountain' is my favourite film of all time and i only really know don cherry via the work he did on the soundtrack and from his collaborations with another favourite of mine - terry riley.

reading a review in the 'wire' turned me on to this reissue and im glad i did. the themes used in the holy mountain soundtrack are again present here but in a loose more improvised form. a generally uplifting and positive vibe is also present throughout this long album (originally a double album).

the instrumentation is varied, the mood spiritual and cosmic but to my ears at least, oddly timeless and genuine. even and ramshackled version of 'the creator has a master plan' is both touching and stunning.

so far, this album has been the perfect tonic returning to the harsh autumnal reality of scotland after an amazing time in asia. my album of the moment for sure but one i'll return to for a long time to come...

quite simply a worthwhile addition to any openminded persons music library.

I'm enjoying this very much. I bought it as a result of having seen Nana Vasconcelos in Germany almost 30 years ago with Don Cherry and Collin Walcott - one of the best gigs of my life; and then after seeing him at home (i.e. my home town) in Portugal just a month or so ago. This music from the 70s is very experimental and in a variety of different styles and contexts - very few tracks were recorded in conventional studios. But a great love of music and joy in playing shines out in every track. Organic music indeed! If it doesn't get 5 stars it's because maybe some tracks go on just a teeny bit too long - but that's forgivable given the period and the recording circumstances.
