4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Music (and at this price does documentation matter?)
Yes there is very little documentation but, given the plethora of information out there, is that really a problem. Music absolutely superb, and for such a multipack reissue, of excellent fidelity. As with most of my CD purchases, bought this for the dual purpose of playing in the car and ripping to play in (my non wi-fi connected caravan).

3.0 out of 5 stars Four Classic Albums
In case you were wondering...

This four-CD box-set comes in a plastic double jewel case. The sleeves shown on the booklet front cover are not reproduced within. Also, there is only a very minimal listing of dates and musicians. In case you were wondering...

This four-CD box-set comes in a plastic double jewel case. The sleeves shown on the booklet front cover are not reproduced within. Also, there is only a very minimal listing of dates and musicians. No real sleevenotes or context information, which is a shame given the historical importance of the records. Overall, the design is poor. The music is, of course, wonderful.

The disc content is as follows:

DISC 1:
Jazz by Sun Ra (1956 album; all 11 tracks)
+
The first six tracks from Supersonic Jazz (another 1956 album)

DISC 2:
The remaining six tracks from Supersonic Jazz
+
Jazz in Silhouette (1959 album; all 8 tracks)

DISC 3:
The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra (1961 album; all 11 tracks)

DISC 4:
"bonus singles" - 18 of them. Not sure how many of these have appeared on other releases (such as The Singles), but maybe a Ra scholar can advise?

On the plus side, there is some amazing music here for a very reasonable price (mine came for £6.70!). But you may find it annoying to have a classic album split across two discs. And there are undoubtedly better reissues on which to enjoy these great LPs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sun Ra - Four Classic Albums, 17 Nov 2014

This review is from: Four Classic Albums [Audio CD] Sun Ra (Audio CD)
The set consists of 3 C.D.'s containing 4 records by Ra's band, 'Jazz By Sun Ra' from 1956, 'Supersonic Jazz' also from 1956, 'Jazz In Silhouette' from 1959, and 'The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra' from 1961, together with a fourth C.D. of singles issued by Ra at various times. Of that, more later.
Although personnels and instrumentation vary on the first three discs the general effect is similar. 'Silhouette' is generally considered to be the best of his earlier records but the other three sessions are of similar quality. All tunes seem to be originals and the general style seems to be chunky arrangements of what are often riff based tunes. The music swings, is deeply jazz based and has plenty of solo space for some very good soloists. Most of the time Ra plays acoustic piano although the proportion of electronica increases as time goes by, but always limited to his solo work.
Several things I noticed which I did not expect. On the earlier tracks much of Ra's solo work reminded me of Herbie Nicholls. Later it becomes more dissonant. Much of his arrangements are similar to the work of Duke Ellington, in that he sets up a catchy riff, which soloists improvise upon, rather than building a more formal structured piece. I am not suggesting anyone was copying anyone, merely that it shows that Ra, the great individualist, was unequivocally part of the jazz tradition.
The bands are not big bands but usually consist of eight or nine musicians. 'Jazz By Sun Ra' has Art Hoyle on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, John Scales, John Gilmore and Pat Patrick on saxes, and a very good rhythm section of Richard Evans and Robert Barry. All are remarkably good. 'Supersonic' has the same horns but adds Charlie Davis on baritone. Again remarkably good. 'Silhouette' has the regulars of Gilmore, Patrick and Davis, but also has some phenomenal trumpet from Hobart Dotson. alto sax from Marshall Allen and James Spaulding, and superb bass playing from Ronnie Boykins. 'Futuristic' is similar, but also adds in Bernard McKinney on euphonium. All the solo work is of the highest quality. If matters stopped there five stars would clearly be awarded.
Disc 4, the singles, should be taken out of the case, thrown firmly as far away as possible, and never listened to again. Most of it consists of doo-wop vocal groups singing songs about Christmas and the like. Both songs and groups are awful.
Having said all of that the quality of the first three discs is such the whole issue is still well worth buying.
As other reviews state there are no sleeve notes but there are personnels which is all you really need.

Very good, but as with all of these multi-album CDs on this label, sleeve notes are almost non existent. Great value though.
