5.0 out of 5 stars Bulky but brilliant, 14 Sep 2013
I've always been a fan of Mophie products having previously used a number of the Juice Pack iPhone cases. The main problem with these has always been the lag time between the production of a new iPhone form factor and a new Juice Pack case being produced. As well as this, each new form factor meant the previous Juice Pack became useless for the new iPhone as it simply didn't fit.

As such, I thought I'd try a different solution this time and bought the powerstation. The Apple Store only had the garish orange version, but needing it there and then I went ahead and bought it. At least it would be hard to lose it I figured.

Basics
------

The device is a good size. Approximately the same width as an iPhone 5 but slightly shorter and around 3 times as thick. It's a metal device covered on all but one of its 6 sides by a thick rubberised material. The rubber has flaps cut into it to enable the port to charge the unit (micro USB) and the port to charge devices (standard USB) to be accessed. The flaps fold back to cover the ports when not in use. It also has a button on the left hand edge of the unit that when pressed lights up 0-4 LEDs in the front of the unit to enable the level of charge left in the device to be checked.

The device is certainly very rugged and seems to have an extremely high build quality.

Using
------

The device came partially charged and so could be used straight away. I can't recall precisely how much charge but I think it was around 50%.

The device comes with a USB to micro USB lead to charge the device, but not a mains plug. I just use my iPhone plug and swap the leads around. I think it's worth checking the ampage of the plug you use since some of them are fairly low which would extend the amount of time needed to charge the device. I'm not sure how long it takes to charge from empty, but certainly an overnight charge more than covers it. You unfortunately can't charge the device at the same time as your phone by connecting your phone to the powerstation whilst it is charging (according to Mophie's website, I haven't tried it).

Charging your devices then simply involves taking the appropriate charging lead and connecting it to the USB port of the power station. I'm led to believe it will charge an iPhone 5 three to four times from empty. It certainly charges my iPhone 5 reasonably quickly (at least as quickly as the mains by my reckoning), and seems to use around 25% of its battery in doing so.

With regard to device compatibility there's a compatibility list on Mophie's website. Essentially it can charge pretty much any device that can be connected to it via USB; I.e. smartphones, tablets, kindles etc. It is better suited to charging smaller devices such as iPhones rather than iPads due to the size of the batteries involved. I believe it can charge an iPad, just perhaps not to 100% capacity.

Negatives
----------

One obvious limitation is that you need to remember to take the powerstation and charging lead out with you. This contrasts with the Juice Pack cases Mophie make which are always with you and easily pocketable as they are attached to the phone in the form of a case. This of course is no fault of the manufacturer, I add it here simply as an observation. The best charger after all is the one you have with you. Very annoying to be out of power and then realise that you left the powerstation at home.

It is fairly bulky, just about fitting in the back pocket of my jeans. Due to its size, it is far better suited to being popped in your bag than your pocket.

It only features one port with which to charge phones/tablets etc with. The cheaper standard battery pack Mophie make which lacks the rubberised case has 2 ports so you can charge an iPhone and iPad at the same time for example. This is sorely missed on this device. I haven't tried using a USB splitter but this may be one possible workaround. NB: The micro USB port can only be used to charge the powerstation, and not for the powerstation to charge other devices.

Finally, accessing the ports can be a bit fiddly. If you have chunky fingers you may find lifting the rubberised flaps back slightly challenging.

Overall
--------

Great device. Well made, suits the purpose for which it was designed very well. The slight irritation of it being slightly too large to comfortably carry without a bag means that when I get an iPhone 5S I'll likely be buying the Juice Pack case to go with it, using the powerstation when away from mains power for extended periods.

Much cheaper alternative brands of similar products are available via Amazon, which may be worth investigating prior to purchasing.

However if you want a rugged battery pack you can just throw into your bag without worrying about lint, rain, knocks etc damaging it & portability/compactness isn't an issue - buy this now.

I travel a lot and am thrilled with this charger. It's not the slimmest most beautiful on the market but a seriously rugged and reliable charger. I can get 4 charges for my iPhone from this box and know that I can just throw it in a rucksack without worrying about cracking or damaging it. Great item

iPhone 5S and 5 - we all know the problems. You get to midday and the battery is dead unless you switch bluetooth, location services and every other useful feature off and then if you're lucky the battery might stretch to 3pm

Fully charged, this beauty gives 4 or 5 charges of an iPhone 5S with enough left in it to top up your iPad. Delighted.

It's all great, but have you ever seen a battery that was not rugged? I haven't.
