i enjoyed tamaras first book and saw this on the free lists couple of days back so bought it. Its really well written and edited, the characters are incredible - i felt i was there with them, laughed when they laughed and creid wheh they cried. the multiple little sub plots peppered through the main story were done well, and added to the overall feel of the tale. Its not a gay romance where we get graphic descriptions of sex all the while but more a slow burn where we are slowly entranced by a look here, a touch on a sleeve and when they two finally get together the magic is so real we don't need to read graphic descriptions to know that what they are doing and feeling is Hot. loved the ending, cried at first part and was soo happy when it all came together.
i can't recommend this book highly enough - its an incredible well written romance and you feel you're there with them. I'm picky about my star ratings - not that much gets 5 but this one certainly makes the grade. 5Stars and looking for what tamara writes next :)

May Contain Spoilers: Having read 'Whistling in the Dark', I was curious to see if Ms Allen could follow it up with her latest offer, 'Downtime, which sees a 21st Century NY crime fighter, transported to London in 1888. WITD was a great book with engaging and warm characters, so could she do it again? Absolutely! 'Downtime' is a wonderful book.

Once again two distinct and intresting male leads. I loved Ezra's gentle dry wit, and he was a good foil to our hero 21st century Morgan. In fact Ezra, IMHO, is the real star of this story. The other characters , especially Derry, felt real and added texture to the story.

The only thing that I felt was not successful about the book, was Morgan's pursuit of Jack the Ripper. In a book with so much going for it, this was superflous, and did not add that much to an already great story. The sexual content was gentle and tasteful, yet still very sensual. I liked the way she built up the relationship between Morgan and Ezra. It felt like a love worth fighting for. Allen does not write one dimensional characters, and it one of her strengths as a writer. All of them have shades of dark and light and it is wonderful to watch the evolve.

Unlike a lot of m/m fiction this not a quick shallow read. Allen has taken care to give us a sense of time and space, and the story unfolds slowly. Stay with it, as with WITD you will not be disappointed. I was sad to leave these characters, and it almost begs a sequel (hint, hint):-) Highly Recommended.

I don't usually write reviews but after reading Downtime I had to write it. When I downloaded it for free I was not expecting it to turn out to be such a good book. The characters in the book were very mature and really likable. The story was very original. A fantastic read throughout. The subplots and all the other supporting characters very also great. Couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. I have downloaded another Tamara Allen book after this. just couldn't stop myself :)
Certainly Deserves Five star or more if I could give it. I will keep my eye on other books from this author

This initially took me a little bit of time to get into but then once I did, I really started to enjoy it - the idea for the story is interesting and there are lots of different parts to it, plus I really quite like the various characters.

There is a lot going on here - time travel, mystery plots, broken engagements, talking to ghosts, psychic stuff, romance, fighting, politics, jack the ripper, mental health issues, book theft from the museum, arson...the list goes on! Now on the one hand, you could say that you won't get bored and I definitely like a plot with numerous threads woven in. But despite enjoying it all, I felt at times like maybe there was a bit too much going on and none of the threads were moving quite as swiftly as I wanted them to.

So despite lots of things happening, I started to find myself getting impatient for the story to unfold and I got a little side-tracked around 60-odd% in when it started to feel like it was going quite slowly. However, luckily I picked it back up after a small break and got back into it. I'm glad I carried on to finish it as the pace picked back up again and the various threads started resolving themselves.

I did think a few of the things resolved themselves a bit TOO neatly, but I kind of didn't care by this point as the BIG thing I was bothered about was the romance between Morgan and Ezra and what would happen - will Morgan go back to his own time and leave Ezra? etc... and I have to say that I felt this part was done really well and I was satisfied by the ending.

Overall an enjoyable adventure that could have been edited down a little to be slightly shorter in length.

First thing....I don't understand the title of this novel and how it relates to the story. Does it refer to back-in-time, two separate words "down time"?
Regardless, although I don't understand the title (perhaps I'm just being dense) the story and writing were excellent. A novel of decent length, very well observed. The language of Victorian England and the language of current day America. Other reviewers have critisised the subplot, the Jack-the-Ripper investigation. I actually enjoyed it. Morgan, an FBI agent, transported back to 1888 London becomes involved in the Whitechapel Murders case.
My only critism: "Downtime" requires additional editing. There are many superfluous passages, well written admittedly, but serving no purpose to the plot, characterisation or story in general.
Thank you Ms Allen for writing an m/m romance without resorting to pornographic sex descriptions to sell your story. I shall certainly purchase more of your writing.

This is a well constructed and interesting tale of time travel by mistake. A group of Victorian gentlemen decide to try out an incantation from an ancient book , which results in an FBI agent finding himself tumbling into the past.

What follows is an at times amusing story, about his struggle to get back to his old life. Things would be so much easier if the book containing the incantation hadn't gone missing. But the time needed to track it down, means that there is time for him to get to know the gentlemen responsible for his situation and one in particular becomes dear to his heart.

The end is a happy one, with love winning out and the agent leaving his modern life behind, to go back to his true love.

Really good read, thoroughly enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

A homoerotic, timetravelling, supernatural detective love story - not an over populated genre. Didn't quite realise what I was letting myself in for when I started this book but found it remarkably hard to put down. The eroticism was written subtly, almost genteel, and although I wouldn't give it to my 13 year old daughter to read and I don't think my husband would like it, I didn't have my sensibilities offended. Especially as it was part of the love story and not just gratuitous. Great story line, nicely complex and well written. The historical (time travelling) aspects felt well researched and almost believable.
I recommend it to those with a broad mind.

Having read about a zillion books in this genre, I was delighted to find this gem. Instead of focussing on the lust part of the relationship, it focusses on the relationship part of the relationship. It is well-written, the characters have depth and charisma to them and you just want them to be happy.

I loved the historical element, too - I actually don't care about historical accuracy and have no idea how accurate this tale is; it doesn't matter, it's a lovely story and a superb read.

I would love to see a sequel to this but in the meantime, I'm going to read everything else by this author.

What a brilliant book, i'm so glad I found it. I sat and read this book in 4 hour sittings!

As another reviewer said, though the storyline seems a bit odd if you read the description, it all comes together so beautifully, giving way to a fantastic thriller, with so much love, sadness, passion and a heck of a lot more emotions all thrown in, leaving you lying on your bed crying in a ball of mushy emotion-filled goo.

Ok so i didn't actually curl up and cry, but it felt like I should have been!

i did not know what the context of this book was and took me a couple of chapters to work it out i was suprised but thought i would continue and im glad i did the charecters are wonderful and the budding romance betwenn the two main male charecters is charming and realistic it was a joy to read and the intermite moments were just soft and gentle, ive read straight romance that have been one step of porn so this was very refreshing and somewhat erotic.

do yourself a favour and give it a go
