5.0 out of 5 stars Zombies: Bringing Vampires and Humans Together, 22 May 2012
Ursula K. Raphael "AstraDaemon of The Zombiep... (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rotter World (Paperback)
The plot: mad scientist creates zombie virus, vampires (tired of being hunted) steal the virus and release it amongst the human population, plan backfires when the undead hunt humans AND vampires, and vampires unwittingly wipe out most of their food supply. Desperate, one coven joins a human survivor compound under the flag of truce, but both sides have mixed feelings; the situation is further complicated when a scientist arrives at the compound claiming to have a vaccine in his lab. The trick is getting through hordes of undead rotters (slow) and swarmers (fast) to retrieve the vaccine and research notes, requiring a team comprised of humans and vampires. A gritty & disturbing story of redemption on many levels, as team members try to make up for past mistakes.

The beginning was a little slow as thoughts and memories of various survivors paint a picture of what happened during the initial outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, including the history between the vampires and humans, but it proved to be a solid foundation for the story. It answered all of my initial questions, and made the storyline more believable.

There is a LOT of dialogue throughout the entire novel, showcasing the personalities of each character. Despite the large cast, Baker did a great job of giving depth to even the most minor characters. There were a variety of relationships woven into the action, holding my interest, even when the survivors weren't fighting for their lives.

While the ending left me wanting more, Baker was kind enough to avoid using a cliff-hanger, leaving only the fate of the compound to the imagination. I believe there is a sequel in the works, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.
