5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
This book gives an unbiased view into the beeching era and certainly puts Richard Beeching in a different light to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacks the thrust of a critical review
The book is interesting in as far as it touches the causes and results of the Beeching era. However I found it seriously lacking in either defending the cuts or delivering an alternative view. It is not an in-depth piece of historical research and analysis.

Hindsight is a great thing and many of the criticisms of Beeching have been raised since his contraction of the railway network. However, many of the criticisms have been justified as many of his predicted savings did not materialise and many lines closed by him have re-opened.

A really absorbing and informative account of the Beeching railway cuts, their place in history and the after effects. Not great writing though, and even worse editing - spelling, grammar and typographical errors litter the text, but if that doesn't drive you wild, it's well worth reading

An interesting and informative account of British Railways since the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. Much food for thought here, Particularly regarding those closures which should not have been carried out such as the Great Central. Recommended.

Every railway fan hates Dr Beeching, but was he really as bad as he has been made out to be? If you read this book, albeit a bit heavy going in places, you realise that the railways were on the verge of imploding anyway. Dr Beeching merely took all the flak, but a lot of the lines and or stations he closed were virtually unused, with one or two passengers per trip!
