One SummerWhat can I say? This book had me from the first sentence! The lilt of the Irish accents, the interesting characters all written with such depth and care I felt as if I had known them all my life. At the end of the book it was as if I was leaving the island very reluctantly because I'd miss my friends so much!! I love it when a book grabs me like this....not since reading Maeve Binchy's or Mary O'Sullivan's books have I enjoyed such a good Irish story!! Nell is engaged to be married to Tim who commutes to the island on weekends from Dublin. The plan is that he will move to the island for good once they are married. Tim's brother James has loved Nell from afar since their first meeting, but he puts his love aside in loyalty to his brother and becomes her best friend. Nell decides to let out her cottage as a holiday home for 6 wks because the extra income will make the difference between an average wedding and one that Nell longs for. Nell's mother manages the tenants and cleans the house for her daughter, unaware of what the future holds for her marriage and life that up to now she had regarded as happy and comfortable. Life gets in the way of plans though as it so often does, and Tim finds putting up with sharing a single bed on weekends in a poky room at the back of Nell's hair salon is just too much to deal with and moves in with his brother James. Along the way of this fantastic tale, there is heartache, joys, breakthroughs for a few lacking in the motivation or self esteem to progress, new love found, love lost, as well as a death of a much loved and admired resident. This book has it all! I felt sad when I had read the last page - if only I could move to the island of Roone and live there with these wonderful characters!! Roisin Meaney has done a fantastic job with this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story that is credible and full of feeling.

Absolutely Charming!,
This review is from: One Summer (Kindle Edition)
A truly heart-warming must read! With a majestic setting and marvelously endearing characters you'll wish you could have as friends in real life, this book has all the ingredients to leave you smiling long after you have finished. One Summer is set on an Island off the coast of Ireland with the lovely and hopelessly optimistic Nell as the main character. Nell has decided to let her cottage over the summer to raise money for her upcoming wedding. This book made me laugh out loud and cry real tears. It is a beautifully written and charming book that you will not want to put down!

I have been fortunate to read many good novels, but One Summer, by far, has been the best novel i have recently read. I loved the unpredictability of the story & the warmth of the characters. I'd happily spend a rainy fortnight on the island of Roone ~ just let me know when the next ferry leaves for the island :0) Well done Roisin & i eagerly await your next novel :0)

A good holiday read,

This book is about a woman who is due to get married and as a way of raising funds for the wedding she lets out her home on an island for 6 weeks to strangers. The book goes through the year coming up to the wedding in which the house is let to people. My first impression of the cover is that it was bright and gave nothing away as to what the story line was as it only showed a woman in a wedding dress holding a bouquet of flowers. As it was in large paperback format the print is a good size and easy to read. The way it is written is very easy to read. It flows along. It does hop from character to character but as they are all inter-connected it marries in well. It is written in simple english but in a way that really helps create a picture of the island of Roone and the characters. Halfway through the book and we are still learning about the characters. After that the pace speeds up and gets more interesting. As the book headed for the end I felt there were a few loose ends that could have been tied up a bit better. I didn't think wow what a great book but I did enjoy it and would read another book by this author. This book is the one I had to read for my book club meeting. It will be interesting to see what the other people make of it.

Nell Mulcahy is getting married and wants to be able to contribute towards the cost of her wedding to boyfriend Tim. So she comes up with a plan to rent out her cottage on the island of Roone for 6 weeks to make some money, during this time she'll move into the room by her salon in her uncle's pub. Tim is not altogether happy with this plan but as he's only on Roone at weekends, due to working in Dublin during the week, he accepts that he'll have to put up with the inconvenience. Each of the tenants who rent out Nell's cottage have their own reasons for wanting to come to the Island to get away from their everyday lives, and they soon find that Roone seems to be just the right place for them to consider their options. Will they find the answers that they are looking for? The story flowed easily throughout the year that it covered and despite there being quite a lot of characters involved, it's not that complicated to follow who's who especially as a lot of them were family or neighbours. One of my favourite characters was Walter, Nell's next door neighbour, who seemed to be the lynchpin of the Island and seemed to have time for everyone especially all of Nell's tenants during their stay. This was a real feel-good read, although there were a few moments of sadness in there too, but the overriding feeling I had when I read this was that I wished I could live in a community like that.I cannot wait to see what's next for Nell and the rest of the Islanders as I know that Roisin Meaney is currently working on a sequel...
