Marvelous, inspired performances! Bravura, indeed! On this recording, the distinguished, award-winning classical double bass virtuoso Rick Stotijn plays selections from the music of Romantic-era composer, bassist, and conductor Giovanni Bottesini. He is supported by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta under the artistic direction of conductor/violinist Candida Thompson, violinist Liza Ferschtman, cellist Monika Leskovar, pianist Hans Eijsackers, and his sister, the noted mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn. The 'best of the best' begins with the rousing performance by Rick, Liza Ferschtman, and the Sinfonietta of Bottesini's famous "Grand Duo Concertant in a Major: Allegro maestoso - Cantabile - Allegro maestoso", so often heard with just bass, violin, and piano, here getting the full orchestral background treatment. "Tutto Che il Mondo Serra" is absolutely gorgeous with Christianne singing with gusto and deep angst, blending her voice perfectly with Rick's bass. The CD title movement "Capriccio di Bravura in A Major: Andante - Allegro con fuoco - Animato" receives a wonderful reading from Rick and the Sinfonietta. And perhaps best of all, the sizzling "Grande Allegro di Concerto "Alla Mendelssohn": Allegro" movement highlighted by Rick's profound soliloquy. And "Duo Concertant on Themes from Bellini's "I Puritani" is pure magic from Rick, Candida, and their Sinfonietta cohorts. A delight for double bass fans in particular and classical music fans in general. Highly Recommended! Five INSPIRED Stars! (6 tracks; Time: 57:03. Note: Rick Stotijn is a guest player/conductor with many orchestras and is principal bass player/soloist of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He plays a Raffaele & Antonio Gagliano double bass using the German-style bow grip.)
