5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book
I purchased this book after reading the other books by this lady. This book takes you back n time to show how crime was delt with. I have enjoyed thid book very much as the auther has put the facts together in a way you just want to keep reading. I managed to read this book in one night as I found it very interesting.

There have been many, and indeed there still are, books about London crime which cover a large number of criminals and their crimes. The usual problem is that they tend to annoy those who are knowledgeable and mislead those who are not. When such a book is written by a 'popular historian' and fiction writer, one's heart sinks. This book seems to be a well researched book of how awful and bloody people can be towards each other.

There have been many, and indeed there still are, books about London crime which cover a large number of criminals and their crimes. The usual problem is that they tend to annoy those who are knowledgeable and mislead those who are not. When such a book is written by a 'popular historian' and fiction writer, one's heart sinks. Admittedly it is difficult to research every criminal in depth; but not to do so means repeating all the old myths embedded in secondary sources. This book is typical of its kind.

For example; Mrs Durand Deacon was not 69 on death and nor was her husband a colonel. She was reported missing two days after the murder by Mrs Lane - not by Mrs Long a day or two later. Christie's last three victims are said to have been prostitutes but there is no evidence that Hectorina MacLennan was one. To uncritically accept a government report is not good news, either.

So, to summarise, this book is poorly researched and regurgitates many old myths. Avoid.
