3.0 out of 5 stars Airplay issues
Everyone in the household is Apple'd up! Generally nothing a problem, but despite best efforts we cant get it to Airplay music from any devices. Updates done etc.. Streams Netflix etc etc all ok. Might have to take it to the Apple store for a fix ?

What is it?
-------------

A tiny black box (27g) about the size and shape of a hockey puck this lets you stream video and music off the web to your TV.   If you have an iDevice (iPhone, iPad or Mac), you can show anything on screen (films, music or photos) on the telly.

It connects to your TV using an HDMI cable, and to the internet using either a cable network connection or wirelessly over WIFI.  You can also connect it to a Surround Sound or Sound Bar which gives it an entire extra dimension in playing music on probably the best speakers in the house.  Finally, it has an optical digital (also known as S/PDIF or TOSLINK) socket to connect to an audio system.

What can you watch on Apple TV?
---------------------------------------------

* Rent or Buy iTunes films and TV programmes - including recent blockbuster films for £3-5 rental
* Music from iTunes music.  Better still use iTunes match and play your entire iTunes music collection
* Netflix.  For £5.99 unlimited film and TV streaming
* Sky News - 24x7 News
* Sky Sports - for £9.99 get all 6 Sky Sports channels for 24 hours
* You Tube and Vevo - to stream “you’ve been framed” style videos and music videos
* Plus a load of other channels

However, where it really stands out is if you already have an iPhone, iPad or Mac as you can “mirror” your screen to big telly.
This means you can:-

* Play DVDs on your Mac hard disk and stream them (using AirPlay mirroring ) to the telly
* Use the beautiful iPad interface to find your favourite programme on the BBC iPlayer and stream it to the big screen
* Play immersive iPad games (eg. Real Racing) on the big screen
* Play your entire iTunes music (and indeed film) collection from a PC or Mac on the TV using “home sharing”
* Show all your holiday snaps on your Photo Stream directly on your TV (complete with background music)

The music aspect deserves special mention.

You see, even if you don’t have a TV Sound Bar or Surround Sound system attached, it’s likely your TV will have some of the best speakers you have in your lounge.  This means, if you have a music collection in iTunes, you can use “home sharing” to make the entire music collection available through the TV speakers.  Better still, sign up for iTunes match (£22 a year), you can play your entire iTunes collection on ALL your Apple devices including iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.  This doesn’t just include music bought in the iTunes store - it includes every MP3 file you have on your PC or Mac which you’ve “imported” into iTunes.  In my case this amounted to thousands of songs - all available to stream.

Alternatively, you can stream Spotify music.  Personally, I pay £4.99 a month for Spotify basic on my Mac, and use a program “Airfoil” (around £12) to stream the unlimited music collection to my Soundbar in the lounge.  I understand you can also do this on a PC.

What’s it like to use ?
---------------------------

Well, in common with nearly all Apple products it’s incredibly easy to set up.  Connect it to the internet (via cable or WIFI) and the TV using an HDMI connection.  Connect it to your Apple Account, and your ready to watch You Tube, Vimeo and Netflix.

In use, you get a simple set of icons on screen, and there’s even a “Remote” App for the iPhone or iPad.

What’s not good about it?
---------------------------------------

* BBC iPlayer is not available (although I play it from my iPad without issue)
* It won’t play “free to air” TV stations (you need to switch onto the Apple TV to use it)
* It really locks you into iTunes or Apple devices for music and films - you can’t just play a film on your PC hard disk directly
* If you don’t own an iPhone, iPad or Mac - there’s no real advantage of this over the competition

Should I buy one?
-----------------------

Well - if you want to stream video and music to your TV, it depends whether you already have an iDevice.  If you have PCs and not a single iPhone, iPad or Mac in the house, you’re probably better off looking at the alternatives.  However, if you have an iPad and/or iPhone this brings an entire new dimension.

With reservations - highly recommended.

I must admit that this product is very quick at streaming from my Mac, iPhone and iPad. I have realised that you can not stream Sky Go to the apple TV. This has been blocked within the Sky Go app. (This product is not compatible with a Microsoft Surface at the moment which is interesting to know for some).
Overall this is a really good product and I recommend this to anyone who wants to do away with wires.
