5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece Re-Issued, 7 July 2012
This review is from: Backstreets Of Desire (Audio CD)
Opinions differ as to the identity of Willy DeVille's masterpiece with Le Chat Bleu (as Mink DeVille) & Loup Garou in the reckoning but for me it's this one- a staggering collection delivered with all & more of the soul, passion & occasional true grit for which this masterful singer was noted for. If you like Willy just a little bit, move heaven & earth to get a copy- you will not be disappointed. For 20 years this brilliant record has been very difficult to get hold of unless you happened to pick a copy up from France or Holland and I for one am delighted to see the Big Beat label make it available to a wider audience at long last through the distribution of Ace. I've been singing this album's praises for a long time now & shall continue to do so simply because it's one of the greatest rock records ever made. Honest!

While I wouldn`t necessarily call this my favourite of the late lamented Wille DeVille`s albums it`s still damn fine, save perhaps for one or two less memorable tracks, in particular the mildly irksome Chemical Warfare, political comment not being Willy`s forte, lyrically or musically.
The treasurable moments make this a set to cherish, not to mention contributions from the likes of Dr John - his presence is very much felt and heard on Jump City - and the now-ubiquitous David Hidalgo on accordion on one track.
The opener, Empty Heart, is a slow-burn stunner which grows on you the more you play it.

Nothin`s as heavy
as an empty heart...

On each DeVille album there are at least a couple of instant classics, in that style he patented for himself, a kind of New York/New Orleans musical gumbo of Spanish Quarter street romanticism. There are a few here (which I`ll happily leave the interested to discover) as well as a delightfully contrary, mid-tempo Latinised version of Hey Joe, with the chord sequence subtly altered and still plenty of attitude: this Joe ain`t no Hendrix avenger, he`s more of a laconic Latin lover. All to a lightly shuffling backing with occasional orchestral interludes, trumpet riffs and vocal whoops from his musicians. It`s wonderful!
There are two versions of a terrific song called All In The Name Of Love, the second - which closes this superb hour-long album - a `Salvation Army Version`. You can probably guess what it sounds like.
The rest of the tracks only prove what a sad loss it was when this too-underrated singer, musician and songwriter died. Class him alongside Southside Johnny, John Hiatt, Springsteen, Ry Cooder, Joe Ely, Nils Lofgren and others whose music is redolent of both trad rock `n roll and something more rarefied, more to do with America`s enticing racial mix with, in Willy DeVille`s case, a hefty dose of that ol` Spanish stroll...

Essential.

Thanks to Big Beat for this wonderful re issue of Willy Deville's overlooked 1992 masterpiece. Re packaged and re released this is the 2nd of Deville's New Orleans inspired comeback albums. Big New Orleans Funk,Soul sound mixed with with mariachi horns and strings and that voice. Bring to boil for a spicy musical gumbo. check out "In New Orleans" for a second serve.
