This album was a key moment in Brian's return to musical form and favour, culminating in the recent live Pet Sounds & Smile tours and the reworking & realisation of Smile itself. Brian's voice is not as pure as it was in his youth but the age / wear / weariness gives songs a new passion and soulfulness. This could be because the songs presented here are more stripped down and less produced than the originals. The mood of the album varies massively from the joyous version of Do It Again to the harrowing Still I Dream of It (a 70's home recording) and the sublime but mournful Til I Die. The refrain is the only thing that comes close to God Only Knows, as far as I'm concerned.
If you feel that Pet Sounds or the Beach Boys sound generally is too slick, this shows how brilliant these songs are anyway but with a more human quality. I love this record!

What i like about this album is the way all the songs on it have been done the way brian wants.Songs like Wonderful, although not as good as the smile version are well produced along with other songs such as 'Do it again'. Songs which he write for the beach boys but had nor real hand in producing and he has done them the way he wants on this album, great to listen to and great for brian.

Of all Brian's solo albums this is my personal favourite. It may not be to everyone's taste as it does have a fairly sparse sound and there is an edge on Brian's vocals, but I like precisely because it DOESN'T sound like a normal album. It's as though Brian and his backing band have squeezed into your living room for your own private concert.

I suspect this little gem is 'underheard' by many, but this album is a great stripped down collection of beach boys greatest hits, that weren't really hits (some from the wonderful Sunflower and Surf's up' albums) and some from Brian's solo album from '88 re-recorded. This cost me a little over £3.00, but it's worth having in your collection at full price, great record.

Great album but this is not an authentic, regular CD. It is in fact nothing more than a CD-R (i.e. recordable media) manufactured on-demand by Amazon (in Germany). This is clearly printed on the rear of the CD but is not stated on the item page on Amazon.co.uk, which is highly misleading.
