4.0 out of 5 stars A review of the game, not of EA
Firstly, I'd like to put aside qarms regarding EA and their always-on DRM. I definitely do NOT agree with it, and it's clear from reading just about any gaming forum from the past month that they've alienated and upset a huge number of paying customers in the hope of killing off piracy and second hand sales, some of whom may now actually TURN to piracy to get around it...

This game has been designed to be played the way the designers want it to be played, not the way gamers want to play.

It forces you to play "socially" with others, that means you can't just sit down and develop your own city. You develop a neighborhood sized city and are reliant on either others developing other cities with facilities you require or you have to jump between different cities to develop say a school system in one, power in another, and so forth; and it just kills the play-ability and takes all the fun out of the game.

It may have been great playing this sociably with fellow employees as the game is developed, but it simply does not scale to the entire internet when playing with strangers.

Furthermore the game is dogged with traffic problems, no matter how well you design the road and mass transit systems the roads always end up in gridlock - which means your city starts to die out and upgrades become un-achievable.

In short:
The city maps are too small.
It's just not fun playing the game on your own or with strangers.
The game is dogged by traffic problems.

It's clearly a prototype game, testing out new ways of social game playing and it fails miserably.

EA fail again... despite having a beta period EA failed to cope with even a small percentage of people trying to play the game... if they didn't have the stupid requirement to always be online, I could happily play my physical dvd copy I bought, but sadly it is worthless...
I shall NEVER purchase an EA product again, on any platform, as they have gone down hill so much in last few years with their greed...

If you want a promising city building game check out Civitas on Kickstarter coming at the end of 2013:

1.0 out of 5 stars Not playable at all, 8 Mar 2013

This review is from: SimCity - Limited Edition (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
I can't play this game at all due to server difficulties. It won't even load the getting started tutorial city. I am in the UK, and there are currently 12 servers listed all of which bar 1 are busy and the one that "is available" has 20 minute waiting time in between requests. This is the biggest disappointment ever and I do not believe I will be purchasing another EA title again. I am seeking a refund for this one, this is a disgrace.

Update: I have since been refunded, I have no intention of buying this game or recommending it to anyone. I do not believe I will be buying another EA game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Need to be online to play it, rubbish as servers can't cope. Needs single player offline., 8 Mar 2013

As the title says. Can only be played whilst connected to the internet, but servers can't cope so you can't play. Would be an amazing game if you could have single player offline or even online but separate from servers. Game is okay to play, not as good as older versions, too many issues currently.

I am really angry at EA for releasing this game with no adequate server. I have not yet enjoyed this game or to have a chance to play it as when i go into the tutorial it disconnects straight away.

I am also angry that I have to wait thirty minutes to play a game is ridiculous.

Ea you have done a terrible job at getting this game out !

1.0 out of 5 stars EA Games are a disgrace, 9 Mar 2013

Simply put, EA Games are a disgrace.

The game is a disaster, full of constant errors caused by server issues. Without any sort of offline option the game is stuck because WHEN the servers go down its nothing but a paperweight. EA have been voted one of the worst companies in the world, and you can see why, their desire to stop any sort of secondhand market be have 'always-on-DRM' has caused another huge failure.

Further to this, each city's size is nowhere near as big as in previous version, meaning you don't have space to build half the buildings you want to. Plus, though each city in your region can interact, only the city that your playing in continues to evolve which means the interaction is fairly pointless. And, to cap it all off, your game is saved online! Which means that if a server error occurs, you will lose all your progress.

This is barely a game at all! If you've ordered it, I recommend cancelling it.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it ZERO stars if I could, 8 Mar 2013

Expected an massive update from the last version but basically got something that takes up space on the HDD and can't be used!

Why you ask? Simple, EA haven't got a scooby-do on how many servers they would need to run the game at release let alone afterwards! No available server connection simply means no game to play!

Why do we need to it play online; if I wanted an online game I'd play World of Warcraft or EVE!

If you like spending money for no reason then buy the game. If not I'd wait until EA gets its act together and proves it knowns what it is doing before you shell out on this game

Overall, had this over 2 days now and I have not been able to play once!

Seriously think twice... infact think 10 times before buying this overpriced game. - Until the server issue is fixed don't waste your money.

Can not fault amazon though, quick delivery, very efficent service... just a shame I missed out on them stopping sales of this terrible product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge FAIL!, 8 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)

All most people are getting is constant errors due to server issues. There is no option to play offline, so when the servers are eventually closed some time down the line your game will become a very expensive Frisbee. On top of this, when you get these server issues you will lose all your progress due to your game being saved to the server itself. So, if you wish to pay for a game that is pretty much unplayable or, if you do get lucky enough to connect, sooner or later your city could very well be lost.

This is the last game i buy with EAs logo on it.

In summary...this is barely classifiable as a game and its totally unacceptable. Trading standards should get involved. I have been sold a game that is dead before its release. R.I.P Simcity
