He is a banker.. they are a quartet of ghosts hellbent on wrecking his life... not that he is ungrateful... just bewildered..

Oh yes, I forgot... there's also Oscar.. a ghost dog who can only manage to manifest its rump and tail...
Link this with its sequel Topper Takes a Trip...and enjoy

Easy to read; irreverant and surprisingly modern in treatment considering it was written in the 1920s; I like the fascinating premise... but a bit too much idle chatter with insufficient drive

I had Topper Takes a Trip, and loved it, this is the prequel (the original version if you like) and it's great, worth reading for a fun few hours

By today's standards the raciness is very mild. I think this is still a highly amusing read, once you get used to the style.

Somehow I had got through life without Thorne Smith, but now I have found him he will stay. Magnificent prose.
