NOT BY IRISH AUTHOR KEVIN BARRY
on 30 August 2013
I bought 'Murderous Addiction' thinking it was the work of Irish author Kevin Barry (writer of 'City of Bohane'). It isn't. Which is a massive, shuddering relief.
The experience of trying to understand how such an astoundingly clunky, two-dimensional thriller, with cardboard characters and no interest in language, could have been written by the Irish Kevin Barry, was surreal. I felt the book had to be some post-modern pastiche...which made me think less of the Irish Kevin Barry. I did him wrong. Same names, wildly tangential authors. (It could almost be a Kevin Barry short story.)
The Kevin Barry who wrote 'Murderous Addiction' is an Aussie writer; I assume he's a self-published, enthusiastic amateur. Fair enough, but I really resent paying for any book littered with spelling and grammatical errors throughout, which the Kindle version is. Shabby.
The Irish Kevin Barry may be a great writer in the making. His Aussie namesake is not worth the tutting over the typos.
