4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly as good as 20 yrs ago
I saw this at the movies in 1990 and it made a big impact on a 20 year old. 20 years later some schenes arent that controversial as they were then but it is still a good road movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the director's cut, sadly
The film is 5 stars, this BD release is sadly 3. This is the regular theatrical cut of the film, and not the director's cut, so some of the violence is trimmed back in small ways and in the case of the shotgun scene has the added optical to obliterate the gush of blood. The BD transfer is extremely good, the film looks and sounds as amazing as it did on the big screen...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ablaze, 12 Oct 2006

This review is from: Wild At Heart [DVD] (DVD)
David Lynch changed tack with Wild at Heart, surreal touches and memorably evil characters are present, such as Willem Defoe's Bobby Peru (`as in the country.'), but it's a loose, funny road trip.

Nic Cage and Laura Dern tear up the screen as Sailor and Lula, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe stuck in a Southern Greek tragedy with only their favourite band, Powermad, on the radio and Motels for company. On their trail, sent by Lula's mother (Played by Dern's real-life mother Diane Ladd) is Harry Dean Stanton's loveable Private Eye.

Add to this mix Circa-Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn in a haunting cameo, Sailor halting a metal gig to sing Elvis and many, many Wizard of Oz references you have a unique, blistering movie. Rockin' good news!

Good value for money.

The film is a little gem itself. Funny, strange yet moving sometimes.

An incredible film. A twisted love story packed with wonderful performances. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern are magnetic, as are the supporting actors. This is David Lynch at his best!

5.0 out of 5 stars This world is weird on top and wild at heart, 21 July 2010
This review is from: Wild At Heart [DVD] (DVD)
Wild at heart is as lynch describes it a road and love movie that takes you on a journey along a twisted highway in the modern world.
If i had to describe wild at heart in three words i would say powerfull, wild, romantic.
It is very different to any other lynch films as it makes complete sense and has a lighter feeling to it as well as a few very disturbing scenes.
The cast is star studed and excellent,i must say Nicolas cage, Laura dern and willem defoe are captivating
The soundtrack is flawless and uplifting with a mixture of rock originating from elvis preseley and classic by angelo badalamenti so its no suprise it won the best film award at Cannes film festival 1990.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced,strange and violent!, 7 July 2009
This review is from: Wild At Heart [DVD] (DVD)
While this is not David Lynch's best movie he is still on top form and it definitly doesn't rank as his worst. The movie is about a couple who embark a trip across America while being tracked down by the girls insane and vicous mother.

The movie has a great cast and a solid performance from Nicolas Cage. It's kind of like a David Lynch version of `Romeo and Juliet.`

There's not much plot to this 'lovers on the run' fairytale road movie but that really doesn't matter. Inspired by the Wizard of Oz, the film is driven by a series of bizarre events, over-the-top violence and surreal imagery that could only come from the mind of David Lynch. After the story is done it's those images that will stay with you (e.g. the blind woman in New Orleans, the dog running away with the hand and of course one of the best ever movie deaths). The lines between reality and imagination are blurred and at times you get the feeling that a lot of the characters belong in some kind of crazy parallel universe. Top it all off with a killer soundtrack and you've got a film that's well worth watching again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stylish weird magic, 18 Jun 2008
This review is from: Wild At Heart [DVD] (DVD)
You will know within five minutes if this movie is your taste. Nicholas Cage gives a great performance as a bad Elvis type dude, with Laura Dern as his young, hot lover. Her mother is a sack of trouble and on the way there are plenty of odd, inspired performances. This is an odd road movie, and there's a lot to recommend it.

I thought this film was great but it requires you to meet it a little more than halfway. If this is you, you'll love it. Willem Dafoe (and his hideous teeth) deserve special mention. Great stuff.

when david lynch made wild at heart he was at the peak of his popularity, twin peaks was enthralling tv viewers and lynch was bursting with creative energy and ideas and it shows.Wild at heart is big, beautiful, strange and wonderful. The sound and colour are rich and haunting and the acting, particulary Willem Dafoe as creepy psychopath Bobby Peru,is spot on.It is very violent but remember this is a Lynch dream and Sailor and Lulas redemption at the end of the film is well earned.A strange dark, twisted head trip.My all time faverette movie and I think one of Lynchs best though I wish that Lynch would break the habit of a lifetime and add a commentory,it wouldnt spoil the magic.

early doors we are treated to a head being pummeled on marble steps to some crushing metal power chords and we know we're in good hands (the splendid mr lynch of course)

cage is on the run with the daugter of a nutty rich mum after torching the house and this gives the film its road movie basis, but lynch creates such compelling characters (cAGE'S ELVIS MAD SNAKESKIN JACKET WEARING ROmANTIC CRIMINAL; dearns nympho screamy femme fatale; defoe's foul creepy sleazy nutter crim) that its got so much more to it. add in the hyper surreal texas at night setting (including a pron film location shoot with 24 stone moms) and some priceless dialogue (cage confronted by a ganag of texmex thugs enquiring "now what do you foggots want?") and you have one of the best films of the 80's, make that ever.
