5.0 out of 5 stars To Be A Lover - this album still rules!
At last - it's available on CD at an affordable price! Not quite sure why it's been retitled "Super Eight" (originally "To Be A Lover [Have Mercy]"), but eight truly super tracks running to forty-two minutes are indeed contained herein.

3.0 out of 5 stars George Faith
A little dissappointed after reading some of the rave reviews. Good one to play your girlfriend if you want to tell her you love her but don't have the bottle.

At last - it's available on CD at an affordable price! Not quite sure why it's been retitled "Super Eight" (originally "To Be A Lover [Have Mercy]"), but eight truly super tracks running to forty-two minutes are indeed contained herein.

This is one of the greatest reggae albums ever made, from the choice of material, the musicianship, smooth, smoky & seductive vocals and the unmistakeable genius evident in the Black Ark production by Lee "Scratch" Perry.

I discovered this album decades ago, and always had "faith" that it would receive due recognition. Finally, 35 yearslater, that can now happen - thanks to this 2012 Trojan/Island reissue. It's a bargain at a fiver or less on here.

The 12" singles taken from this LP are amongst my most cherished vinyl artefacts. Put on this record and be gently but quickly transported to a strange and wonderful technicolour world of sound. Around four minutes into the inspired fusion of "Midnight Hour" & "Ya Ya", George yelps out "I'm gonna wait 'til the midnight hour" a couple of times with echo, the phasey organ swirls, guitar & drums chop and tumble. Wilson Pickett & Mr. Dorsey would have wide grins when hearing it.

"So Fine" is just fantastic - play it LOUD to reach into the depth of the swirling, dubby production. Towards the track's end, George puts out a series of uh's, whoa's and yelps that gives Scratch a feast of new sound to scatter around in his inimitable style.

Elsewhere, heavenly muted brass and backing vox (courtesy of assorted Meditations & Mighty Diamonds)drift in and out, heavyweight reggae icons including Ernest Ranglin, "Chinna" Smith, Sly Dunbar and "Deadly" Headley Bennett combine to embellish George's soul-drenched lover's rock voice.

Put it on when you feel bad, or when you've had good news, on a sunny day or a bath night, or when you just want to convert the formerly uncovertible to the real value of reggae, performed and produced by people at the peak of their form.

Five stars ain't enough - you might say I thus recommend this record!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lee Perry at the top of his game, 28 May 2012

Quite simply magic music from Lee Perry's Black Ark studio. This is an outstanding recording, easily matching Perry's other better known album productions from the same period such as Max Romeo's War in a Babylon and Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves. So how about a reissue of the Party Time LP by The Heptones?

This is top class and well worth taking the time to appreciate it as it should be done.
Very easy to listen to yet complex enough to keep you tuning in to the layers of depth and genius that is so simple that at first you don't realise how fully groovy it is.
Subtle, understated, hypnotic and glad to have it. Buy - don't ponder - got to be got - get it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album - but exactly the same as the 'To Be A Lover' LP, 3 Aug 2012

If you don't have this in your collection you need to get it - classic Lee Perry productions in a smoother, almost lovers rock style. Budget price too. However, be aware that this cd has exactly the same content as the George Faith 'To Be A Lover' LP, which came out on the Black Swan label. I have the vinyl in my collection, so have ended up with a duplicate of it on cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars George Faith title clear-up, 10 Feb 2014

Hi there all, just to clear up the title thing, the album was actually called 'Super Eight' before the album was released by Black Swan/Island/Mango. It was released on the Jamaican 'Black Art' label run by Perry himself.
When Island took over the album for its own release, they renamed it 'To Be A Lover', gave it some rather non-descript artwork and reversed the running order of the A and B sides.
Still whichever track comes on first, it's one of the best Perry productions by a country mile.
