5.0 out of 5 stars Three Great Ozu films (even if they're not melodramas), 1 July 2013

This review is from: Ozu - Three Melodramas (2 DVD set) [1933 - 1957] (DVD)
It is odd that BFI have released these three films of Ozu as "melodramas." Although he was greatly attracted to the Hollywood genre when he was young, he later eschewed most of the most salient features of the melodrama: emotional climaxes are avoided. Ozu preferred to have these scenes take place off-screen and the result is a greater concentration by the viewer on the psychology of the subjects and their situations. BFI should be applauded for offering these three great films (did Ozu ever make one that was not great?) If they chose to group them as melodramas is misleading but understandable from the point of view of marketing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual for Ozu, 3 Mar 2014

"Melodramas" in the title of this collection of three films is the clue to their nature. "Woman of Tokyo" from 1933, is a silent film, while the others are from the 1950s and, of course, are talkies . In every case, we have a greatly entertaining film to watch, and, in every case, be prepared for trouble and strife in the lives of the main protagonists, with no guarantee of a happy ending.

If you like Ozu's later work this is worth adding to your collection. Very reflective of his style and way of working.
