5.0 out of 5 stars Every one of Rudy Rucker's short stories - unmissable!
According to the Author's preface Rudy Rucker's stories are characterized by Thought Experiments, Power-chords, Gnarliness, Wit, Transrealism and Collaboration. If I had to pick one of those as being most important it would be Gnarliness - the idea that reality is complex, more complex that you can possibly understand but made from simple rules and that makes for stories...

To be fair to this author, he says at the start that the reader should start somewhere about the middle of his career because he was still perfecting his craft in the earlier ones. I found this to be true. Although well written, the first few stories were really not worth reading or engaging for me. Then there were several in a row that played on the peculiarities of quantum mechanics but shifted to a macro scale. Again Ok stories but not gripping for me. They felt similar to each other. By this time we are up to story 23 or so out of about a hundred. They do start to improve after that and probably around forty or fifty become enjoyable. So take the writer at his word and skip the first few.

According to the Author's preface Rudy Rucker's stories are characterized by Thought Experiments, Power-chords, Gnarliness, Wit, Transrealism and Collaboration. If I had to pick one of those as being most important it would be Gnarliness - the idea that reality is complex, more complex that you can possibly understand but made from simple rules and that makes for stories which surprise, delight and sometimes confuse.

Value for money isn't normally one of the judging criteria for books, but this one contains all of Rudy Rucker's short stories - over 70 stories in about 1000 pages!

If you like Rudy Rucker stories then you'll really want this book. If you like Science Fiction in general and you haven't tried any Rudy Rucker then this is a great place to start. Prepare to have your mind expanded and your consciousness blown away into Gnarly pieces.
