4.0 out of 5 stars NO NEED FOR THIS MUCH BOOK....THE CD IS GREAT
This is put out by the outstanding Jazz Man/Now Again label, famous for its Florida Funk, Carolina Funk, etc., series. Another great line-up of picks. The label is tops for finding rare and great tunes. However, there is too much emphasis on the book rather the CD in its presentation. I am always glad to know about the artists and the original disks, however, a standard...

1.0 out of 5 stars SOUL DRAB
It's time to rise up and fight against compilations that come across as super cool but which contain tracks you genuinely shouldn't inflict on friends or family. The songs on this comp really are generally awful. They sound like rejected demos by dodgy musicians with but a loose grasp of composition. There are a couple of tracks I might want to play out in a club but,...

This is put out by the outstanding Jazz Man/Now Again label, famous for its Florida Funk, Carolina Funk, etc., series. Another great line-up of picks. The label is tops for finding rare and great tunes. However, there is too much emphasis on the book rather the CD in its presentation. I am always glad to know about the artists and the original disks, however, a standard jewel case and booklet would have done just fine. Instead, you get a rather large but kind of thin book with the CD in a paper sleeve stuck somewhere in the pages. Usually when you see something like this, like a copy of Record Collector or special of Rolling Stone, the CD is usually lame. Of course this is far from the case here. The CD is first rate and should have been given more emphasis on how this package is presented. Actually, the rather detailed descriptions of the artists seem to emphasize the marginality if anything. However, I think the label and all the artists should get a Grammy award for this series, and that is why I am really not wild about how this one is presented. Also, oddly, Put A Smile on Time is in stereo on YouTube but is mono on this CD. With all this stuff they write about in the book, they could have at least given an explanation of where they got this mono mix from. A rare white label promo? Music-wise, it's first-rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars What it takes, 17 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My favourite tracks on this surprisingly good (not known) CD are UPC All stars - Don't get discouraged" Mixed Sugar - "its a bad feeling" Key & Cleary "what it takes to live" Sha la la "Mixed feelings", came with book that was very interesting about these bands/backing to some known artists. Please enjoy:) as I did

There are a couple of tracks I might want to play out in a club but, then again, probably not.
