Soulful and Mellow
on 17 April 2012
This is a strong compilation of 'Rock Steady' sounds. Pound for pound, a better compilation than the 'Ska' double cd in the 'Treasure Isle' series. There's a good mix of familiar tracks and some that are not so familar. It comes with a 12 page booklet that has lots of label scans (if small) and brief liner notes by Ian McCann, Editor of 'Record Collector' - a fine magazine.
CD1. 1966 - 67 (56mins). This is the stronger cd in my opinion, it contains fantastic tracks by Phyllis Dillon 'Don't stay away', lots of great tracks by the Paragons (led by John Holt) the best being the wonderful 'Only a smile' - worth buying for this heartbreaking track alone. Nearly all good 9.5/10.
CD2. 1967 - 68 (57 mins). Not so strong, but still contains some real gems - 'Why birds follow Spring' by Alton Ellis and many by the wonderful 'Melodians'. Mixed bag 6.5/10
Overall, a great compilation of mellow sounds. Fully recommended.
