I bought this collection because the only copies I have of these early albums of Joan Baez are on audio tape. The sound quality is excellent on these discs so congratulations to Jasmine records for their release. If there are any fans of Joan Baez who are missing these albums in their collection I heartily recommend this release.

You'll find Joan Baez' first four albums here; two from independent labels, which she subsequently had withdrawn, and the other two for Vanguard. The first two albums were obviously somewhat impromptu, and a few of the songs are pop numbers. What prompted her to seek their withdrawal is not specified, but in any event they are now out of copyright. The Vanguard sessions are superior, and overall the compilation is folk oriented. It will appeal to her legion of fans, but I find it difficult to listen to her voice over an extended period, because there is a disconcerting shrillness in the upper register which does not fall easily on the ear.

This is not a collection of great songs, performed by an artist at the top of her game. Some are just the first efforts of a competent guitarist with a good voice. Other tracks are oddities as Joan Bayez struggles to find her niche and potential exploiters of her talent try to fit her to their ideas of what will sell. Some, however, show what is to come. All in all a pleasant enough collection, with the trademark voice growing in confidence and the song choices becoming more focused and appropriate for her style. Worth buying if you already have the classic albums.

Joan Baez fans will most likely already have her first and second LPs on Vanguard from 1960 and 1961, so the real attraction on the double CD here is the inclusion also of her pre Vanguard recordings. Recorded in 1958 and 1959 they show a very early developing Baez voice performing a pretty dire choice of songs from folk, traditional and recent pop hits; some are performed very rushed and overall very rudimentary recording, sharing vocals on a few tracks of the second LP with little benefit.

An interesting historical artefact in making available on CD what were very limited LP releases in the '60s, this release will one suspects be mainly of interest to die hard Baez fans who want to have everything she recorded. I must admit that for me the Baez arc really takes off in the mid 1960s with her live recordings and connecting with Dylan. I have her early Vanguard recordings already but only play them intermittently. As a result I will not be keeping this release though appreciate its historical importance to the Baez story.
