Plug and Play - certainly not!!
on 7 October 2013
Looking for a Phono Pre-amp with USB interface to record some of my old records. After much looking around, decided on the Rega Fono Mini A2D for a number of reasons. Good price, USB(obviously) excellent comments on the phono amp performance and MADE IN UK! However...........
This unit does not work with Windows 7 on either of my PCs. Computers do not recognise the device and report a problem with it so exclude it from the machine. Much searching on-line for answers did not come up with anything positive and the only reference to the A2D's USB performance I found was the same - the USB interface would not work.
Unfortunately, the literature for this is very light and of no use to sort the problem. I suspect on the simplicity of the information reflects the ease of connecting a standard phono pre-amp but totally overlooks/ignors the likely problems of USB interconnectivity with no drivers! There is no additional supporting information on the Raga website to help the poor customer out and I would also warn any potential buyer that there is also no on-line or direct support available from Rega. For any of their items you have to go directly to their distributor for help - not an option via Amazon! So, Rega, you have left me with no alternative but to return this unit for a refund. (Rega folks if you read this - a serious flaw with your customer service and support I think.)
Best of British hardware, on paper yes, in practice no - in my view this item is not fit for purpose. I cannot comment on the Pre-amp as I bought this specifically for the USB interface (which did not work and which hence grabs the low mark). A multitude of favourable comments suggest the amp in isolation is good - I can but dream..... However, Rega - if you are going to champion British, give customers some decent support.
