4.0 out of 5 stars Another little warning..., 28 Jan 2013
This review is from: Six Classic Albums [Audio CD] Yusef Lateef (Audio CD)
As usual with these Real Gone Jazz sets, there is some absolutely wonderful music here from one of the all-time great musicians. Six beautiful LPs, which are all at least fifty years old now, meaning that they have fallen into the public domain. The sound quality is excellent, at least in my opinion, and I think you'd have to be pretty demanding to find anything much lacking about it. But it IS lacking in other ways - and not just the expected lack of liner notes in these compilations...

Yes, the first LP on Disc 2, "Cry! - Tender". When originally released, it had eight tracks, four on each side. But the version in this set has but seven tracks: Side 2, Track 1 was "Yesterdays", which is quite missing here. And for no reason that makes any sense. If it were that the two albums on this disc were particularly long and it would not have fit, then that would at least be a reason, though even then they should SAY so! But the whole disc runs a little over 63 mins, and is the shortest of the three, so an extra track of 4 mins 25 secs would easily fit!! No, it's just arrant carelessness, and I refuse to forgive that.

One could also quibble that there are a couple of brief tracks missing from the end of "The Centaur and the Phoenix" on Disc 3, but they are in fact bonus tracks from the copyrighted CD release of the album. The version presented here is the complete LP, as released in 1960. To me, that is perfectly all right, but I mention it in case anyone needs to know.

There is no track listing for these 'public Domain' releases so I thought this would be of help.
The three CDs are 'Digitally remastered' which is always a good sign- some of these rereleases have terrible sounds- some excellent.

The six classic albums included are
Jazz Mood,
The Dreamer,
Cry Tender,
The Fabric Of Jazz,
The Centaur And The Phoenix and
Eastern Sounds.
Thats 2 albums per CD.
The Real Gone Jazz label has garnered some really good reviews for sound quality.
The digitally enhanced sound is a good indicator but for a proper review I really suggest you read other, more knowledgeable people's reviews.
The collection is on 3 CDs encased in a double wide jewel case. Enhanced to boot makes this a tempting buy.
Amazon, at the time of writing, has not provided a track list.
So this may be of interest and use?

Often there's no info on which albums or tracks are on each CD.

If anykind person could tell me the 'breaks' in the CDs would they be kind enough to add a comment in the comments box?
I'll credit their help - of course.

The tracks are:-

1. Metaphor
2. Yusef's Mood
3. The Beginning
4. Morning
5. Blues In Space

Six very good albums from one of Lateefs most interersting periods. If you like his approach to jazz, or autobiophysic music, as he calls it, you like these.

I had the dreamer year ago,and is an album of genius, six albums for this price is crazy, and these people are moaning about liner notes,it's the music that counts,if you don't have the full sleeve i presume you can't copy them, good idea if you ask me,other tracks i've heard, don't be put off,a true polymath of music, and Mr Hubbard for that matter,I saw him play about 92 and he was still blowing a storm, longest note a wind player i've ever heard, all i can say is buy it,and melt.
