2.0 out of 5 stars The human side of the great escape
A book that starts well and brings the human side of the great escape to life, the evil of the men behind the murders. Unfortunately the book begins to repeat itself as it describes the horrors the re captured airmen went through, many descriptions are repeated purely because the nazi hierarchy used exactly the same methods for the murder, disposal of the bodies and...

...if you did, this well researched and very readable book will tell you. The story of absolutely dedicated detective work set in an ravaged environment reminiscent of the Third Man, which is a testimony to the RAF's determination to achieve justice for the murdered men and their families, and the handful of individual RAF police officers who would not give up until the perpetrators of the cold mass slaughter of prisoners of war were found and judged before a real court of justice. They got what was coming to them, Nazi filth.

A story i had not heard about. Well written given the complications of this story. A very good read, well worth getting your head around the many characters!

An interesting read. We all know about the actual escape but the detail of what happened to the escapers and their executioners is fascinating reading

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 25 April 2013

Having seen the Steve McQueen film many times I was very much looking forward to learning more about the aftermath of this great escape. The book started off well however soon became very difficult to read and follow. Not from a conventional point of view I might add (this book is far from filled with verbiage). It was simply the vast amount of German people that the book covers in each chapter. This led to name overload (which doesn't help when they're all German)and made it extremely difficult keeping track of who's who. The frustration of having to keep going back to refer to previous sections boiled over and I gave up at chapter eight.

It was a reasonable read and one that is necessary if you remember the film as a lad. I don't recommend as a holiday book.
