Stretch,Were one of those 70's/80's bands that really deserved more success than they got. Most people remember their one hit "Why did you do it", But if you look further they also had 2 really excellent albums that really are worth checking out, They are;"You can't beat your brain for entertainment"(What a great title)and also "Elastique" Which contained the single named above. The two main band members from the original band have got together and released this cd which is full of great covers of old blues numbers,The one exception is the reworking of "Why did you do it" Included on here include songs written by Willie Dixon etc. What suprised me was how well Elmer Gantry sounds,There ain't any voice like that elsewhere in the music business. But to me the money paid for this is worth it just for the version of "See that my grave is kept clean" what a track.Go on treat yourself to some real music,Well worth anybody's money.Highly recommended.

The heart and soul of Stretch is Elmer & Kirby who have been away for waaaay too long!
I first saw them by chance one Tuesday night in Barbarellas Nightclub in 1976. Half filled nightclub - no one knew who they were - and they tore the place down! It was one of the best gigs I have ever seen.
Went straight out and bought their first two albums - Elastique and Can't Beat Your Brains for Entertaiment - and they are still amongst the finest blues rock you will ever hear. BUY THEM NOW!

They should have been massive as a band - so much talent in vocals, guitar and song writing - but fate can sometimes be very cruel and it never happended for them.

Fast forward 30 yrs and THEY ARE BACK!

Bought the cd without hearing anything prior and trepidation was high when I pressed play ....

It's absolutely superb! Great re-working of "Why did you do it" and a fantastic collection of blues classics with world class vocals and Kirby's wonderful blues guitar - they should be giving Kirby a Masterclass column in some of the Guitarist magazines. Simply excellent.

So BUY IT and be absolutely delighted!

Welcome back Stretch - now when's the tour?!!

Stretch are back with a fine Bluesy Covers album, just so defining, as to where Elmer and Kirby were coming from all along...Four Willie Dixon covers..."Hoochie Coochie"..."Down in the Bottom"..."I Love the Life I Live"..."I Just Wanna Make Love to You"..all given the re-workings that only these two guys know how...marvelous interpretations with great vocals and harmonica by Elmer, and guitar by Kirby...throw in a great new version of " Why Did You Do It" minus the brass...and you have a VERY Welcome Back Boys..

Good bluesy album by Kirby och Elmer Gantry. The first album since their heyday in the seventies. Elmer is in fine voice as always.

As the other reviewers have said a talented and underrated band who were criminally overlooked despite the relative success at the time of 'why did you do it' which incidentally was not representative of their usual output. Although I never did purchase their releases at the time - big mistake - I invested in the 'why did you do it' compilation of tracks from their back catalogue which is a terrific buy. To get back to this recording, I was surprised to discover the core members of the band Gantry/Kirby Gregory had reformed and produced such an excellent cd. Admittedly I did cheat by checking them out at the Borderline beforehand and was amazed to hear that the two main men were as impressive as ever - Elmer Gantry's voice was in terrific shape and Kirby was immense on guitar. This is totally representative of their performance that night and shows how right they were to record again. Very fine blues/rock musicians who have shown with this collection of well executed cover versions (mainly) that their talent still shines brightly.
