4.0 out of 5 stars A Fantasy Melting Pot, 30 Mar 2012

If you want a fantasy world for your young reader that has a wonderful setting, great characters and populated by many different creatures in a hodgepodge melting pot, then you really have to get Conrad Mason's The Demon's Watch. It brings the best of fantasy to the reader with a whole host of cracking characters, top notch entertainment and of course demonstrates that brains can outsmart brawn be it either magical or physical.

It's cleverly written, there is a whole host of twists and Conrad doesn't waste time by getting down to the nitty-gritty that will keep your young reader hooked to the final page. Throw in conspiracy, double dealing and selfish desires, which when fought against by the positive traits of our band of mismatched heroes, really gives the reader a treat to enjoy. Magical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your musket!, 13 Mar 2012
The world Mason has created here is marvelous - Port Fayt is a busy bustling port town you can see, hear, touch and even at times smell(!). Ideal for a fantasy adventure.

So many characters shine out through the story. Joseph Grubb is the put upon half-goblin boy that finds his rightful place in life through his loyalty and his bravery. The nasty fairy Slik is wonderfully tricksy. And Tabitha is fiesty, brave, quick-thinking and flawed. There might be a better female character in children's literature, but I've yet to come across one.

Action-packed + funny + skulduggary = What's not to like!!!

As an adult reader (and fan of fantasy literature) I loved this. I'm not often moved to write a review but this is a cracking debut. Can't wait for the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rip roaring adventure!, 6 Mar 2012
I couldn't put this book down from start to finish! It might be aimed at children, but it's a fantastic read for all. A wonderful world full of magic and skullduggery appears as soon as you read the first page....

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced fantasy with really gritty themes., 18 Oct 2012
I read The Demon's Watch at the same time as my 11-year-old nephew, and his 8-year-old brother dipped in too. We all enjoyed the blood-thirsty fights, the fast pace of action, the twisting, clever plot and witty dialogue, and the artwork. I thought they might be scared by the murderous witch, but I shouldn't have worried. Scary enough, but in a good way! On another level, talking about the book led to some interesting thoughts about politics, trade and power, and about race and identity. The vocabulary and plot would be quite challenging for children under 10 I think, but it's definitely entertaining enough for adults to enjoy reading alongside their children, and explaining things as they read.
Favourite character: Slik the fairy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new world has arrived!, 12 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We got this book as we saw the stories in graphic form in the Phoenix comic. Our 10 year old was not disappointed - and neither were we. This story has a great narrative, great characters and a great fantasy world in Port Fayt. Why aren't these books in ever book shop window???!
