5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a read
Just finished A Master Mariners Tale and discovered a gem of a read. An insight into life at sea but with an amazing tale of spying, politics, high sea adventure and the odd public house thrown in that steers it away from being just any old maritime history book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Engaging but odd!
A lively tale written in the style of Enid Blyton's " Famous Five" series. Lots of grammatical and spelling errors. Lots of technical errors regarding sailing terms. Not sure if they are the author's errors or if from the original journal. Still not sure just how much of the tale is from the journal and how much is fiction, but then maybe it's all fiction! As...

Just finished A Master Mariners Tale and discovered a gem of a read. An insight into life at sea but with an amazing tale of spying, politics, high sea adventure and the odd public house thrown in that steers it away from being just any old maritime history book.

Read on and discover from the authors point of view the coincidence, extraordinary research and some unique assistance that made the writing of this book possible. In my opinion this made the book all the more fascinating. I look forward to more books from Fred Cooper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read., 31 Jan 2012
This review is from: A MASTER MARINER'S TALE: A Victorian Action Adventure, Espionage and Spy Thriller Novel (Kindle Edition)
I thoroughly enjoyed this novelette. I had never read anything about sailing ships in the 19thcentury before but this storyline about a collier brigantine - not exactly thetypical sailing ship, pirate, swashbuckling theme - was a refreshing change. The book is very well written and gentlyintroduces Dick Raine, Master Mariner and captain of "The William Thrift" andhis crew entering harbour at Seaham in 1881. The reader experiences the wild, hard life of sailors coasting coals along the coast of County Durham to Londonand the east coast towns of England. Harbour life and daily life on shore inthe town are vividly described. Thestoryline then leaps forward 18 months to a tragic event that was toemotionally scar Dick Raine for the rest of his life...... but it doesn't endthere....Events unfold which makes Dick Raine despair at the cruelty ofhis fellow man.

The novelette is presented with anumber of excellent photographs which help to illustrate and bring to life thecharacters, the ship and the harbour life.

A very well written, honest and spellbinding true story. Very worthy of greater publicity and recognition. Once you start to read it, you won't want to put it down.

A huge well done and thank-you to the guy who found the journal, researched it and published it.

What a cracking read. I was totally immersed in the scenes, found the book very engaging but also true to life. Well worth buying especially for anyone who likes nautical historical fiction.

Fascinating story, shades of 'Riddle in the Sands'. Excellent descriptions without getting too technical on sailing 19th century ships. Would have liked it to be a lot longer, there would seem to be scope for quite a saga.

As a fellow native of Seaham I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about many of the places I frequented in my youth. I too am interested in genealogy and have discovered that one of my ancestors was one of the pilot families mentioned in the book. He came from Portsmouth originally.
Looking forward to reading your next book.

A well written, if over dramatised ,story of life at sea around the UK Coast. A lot of interesting fact woven into a good yarn for holiday or aeroplane reading.
